ethnographic paper guideline
Culture Paper: 24.5 % Due on Monday, 12/02- Each student will select a specific culture and write a minimum 5 page paper (double spaced, 12pt., Times New Roman) describing it utilizing an anthropological perspective. You may select any culture or subculture to write your paper on as long as conducting the research does not pose a risk to you or anyone else. Emphasis should be placed on applying the course theories and perspectives to analyze the culture (you could discuss their language, symbols, economics, kinship system, religion, etc.). You are required to utilize outside scholarly anthropological sources in the paper, but be sure to cite everything properly using MLA format and include a works cited page. Do not use Wikipedia or Everyculture.com and if you do, be sure to place all direct quotes in quotation marks or significant points will be deducted. If you plagiarize, you will receive a zero on this paper.
If you select a culture that you have access to, you have the option to conduct ethnographic fieldwork with the culture as long as the research does not pose a risk to you or anyone else. You may not conduct ethnographic research with drug dealers, drug users, anyone who is breaking the law, pimps, prostitutes, children, the mentally ill, people with eating disorders, the homeless, axe murderers, gangs, addicts, recovering addicts, or anyone else who is going to get you killed or me fired. If you do decide to conduct ethnographic fieldwork, you must get permission from the people you are working with to conduct the research, it must not pose any threat to yourself or others, and the project must be approved by me. Extreme caution must be taken when working with people you don’t know and I encourage you to take a friend along if you choose to conduct interviews or visit strange places. Students in the past have worked with sports teams, fandoms, religions, their own culture, cosplayers, bronies, online worlds, renaissance fairs and a huge number of topics

Currently in Ethnography it is hard to define the way an ethnographer is supposed to interact with their subjects in their fieldwork process. Many ethnographers are expanding on the way they interact with individuals in who can provide information on the subject at hand. Currently ethnography’s primary means of collecting information is still done through participant observation and conducting key informant interviews. Which still gives a generous deal of information to the researcher but another way to become informed of a culture is becoming immersed into their world. For an ethnographer to do this they may need to feel like they fit in, start doing activities that the ones being researched take part in. Also the researcher may change the way they…

Much of this chapter relates to many major points covered in the course Introduction to Anthropology. The most prominent discussed both by Barker and the course text itself is ethnographic fieldwork, which many anthropologists partake in. Both Barker and the course content describes the holistic perspective of understanding a culture as a whole. As explained in the text, Barker uses this participant observation to truly get inside the lives and minds of the Maisin people, which helps to provides more qualitative data. The observations Barker provides in chapter one are highly detailed. It consists of over 25 years of association and research, making the relation to theories…

Shaki, or Napoleon A. Chagnon’s 15 month enculturation with the Yanomamo tribe, Bisaasi-teri is characterized by fear, discomfort, loneliness, nosiness, and invaluable experiences through relationships and modesty about human culture. Chagnon documents the experience through the struggle and discovery surrounding his proposed research, as his lifestyle gradually comes in sync with the natural functions of his community. Much of his focus and time was consumed by identification of genealogical records, and the establishment of informants and methods of trustworthy divulgence. Marriage, sex, and often resulting violence are the foremost driving forces within Yanomamo, and everything that we consider part of daily routine is completely unknown and inconsequential to them. Traveling between neighboring tribes, he draws conclusions about intertribal relations, especially concerning marriage and raiding. Chagnon deals with cultural complexity that takes time to decipher, and in process, potential risk. Confronted with seemingly trivial situations, they often become unexpected phenomena and Chagnon’s adherence to documentation is amazing. He encounters personal epiphanies that I find intriguing, related to privacy and hygiene. This report becomes an inspiring document of an extreme anthropologic lifestyle as much as it is a cultural essay.…

The American National Biography, as stated before, was written to include more information on the role of women and ethnic minorities. The 24 volumes boast a large and well-qualified editorial board, as well as the support of American Council of Learned Societies. The author of this particular exposition is an editor and contributor for the American National Biography. The information on Lucy Hayes will be critical to my research because I will be able to portray the difference between First Lady Hayes and First Lady Garfield. I will also explore the differences in character, and the role this played in public reception of the two women.…

The Mexican culture is a very distinct culture. Over the break I was fortunate enough to visit Tijuana, Mexico and analyze the cultural differences represented at the border. The way that I traveled to Mexico was by walking across the border at the San Diego/Tijuana joint border location. In doing so I was able to actively participate and evaluate the cultural clashes and intensification in this border “society” environment.…

Introduction: One’s culture is a key part of their identity. Culture can reside in a nation, family, ethnicity, a religion, etc. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “A Nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people”. One’s culture is usually seen through the religion and traditions of their nation; therefore this influences their everyday lives and their behavior.. I conducted five intercept interviews by approaching people walking through Carytown , a local shopping area. I spoke with four women and one male. Two of the interviewees shared their ages which were 61 and 74.The other interviews were approximately 25-30, 55-60, and 70-75 years old. All the interviewees listed walking was one of ways they did physical exercise. The respondents who were retired or appeared retirement age all stated they walked regularly. The two respondents who said they worked indicated that having time to fit in exercise after work affected how much they exercised. Two of the women indicated they had walked for exercise their whole life. Three of the interviewees shared staying healthy, feeling good, and feeling limber…

“A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.” (Gandhi, M. (n.d.)). People in our world come from all different cultures that we may not always be familiar with. Our experiences and perceptions represent the values and decisions that are made in our life. It is important to get to know the different types of cultures that surround us and how others live their lives. The article, Body Ritual among the Nacirema, relates to many core aspects of sociology, including culture, cultural relativism, ethnocentrism, and conflict theory…
