ESC 1011 / ENV 1011

Planet Earth: Our place in the
Universe
The beginning and evolution of the Universe, our Solar System and Earth; planetary geology of our
Solar System and other solar systems. The structure of the Earth, including: geological evolution of the Earth; plate tectonics and the structure of the Earth's crust; minerals and igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and their formation processes; formation and evolution of life on Earth.
Geohazards (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides and avalanches, and meteorite impacts) and modern day changes to the Earth's atmosphere and environment.
ESC1011 and ENV1011 are the same unit, with minor changes made in ENV1011 to accommodate the BEnvSci student cohort. If you have completed one, you cannot enroll in the other. Only students enrolled in the BEnvSci are able to enroll in ENV1011.

Monash is committed to excellence in education and regularly seeks feedback from students, employers and staff. One of the key formal ways students have to provide feedback is through the Student Evaluation of Teaching and Units (SETU) survey. The University’s student evaluation policy requires that every unit is evaluated each year. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the surveys. The feedback is anonymous and provides the
Faculty with evidence of aspects that students are satisfied and areas for improvement.

Tectonic plate’s movement creates ocean basins, mid-ocean ridges, through collision. Colliding plates push sedimentary materials into an uplifted mass of rock that contains numerous folds and faults. The Earth has undergone a number of mountain building periods. The process of creation is first by the accumulation of sediments then the tectonic collision causes rock deformation and crystal uplift and finally the isocratic rebound continues to cause uplift despite erosion and causes the development of new mountain peaks through block faulting.…

Our Solar System INT1 TASK 1 The Evolution of our Solar System • Observations of the stars, sun, and planets appearing to revolve around the Earth, which seem to be at motionless, lead ancient astronomers to believe the Earth was the center of the solar system. • Claudis Ptolemy’s version of the Geocentric Model was the most widely accepted and recognized example of the Geocentric Model. • Nicolaus Copernicus published a book on his theory of a heliocentric system, the book, De revolutionibus orbium coelstium, puts the Sun at the center of the Solar System with planets revolving around it. It also pointed out that the Earth was in motion and that motion could explain the Retrograde motion of the planets.…

Astronomers have been studying the stars since the first person laid eyes upon the night sky. Thousands of years of observations and recording all of the events have all contributed to the vast knowledge we enjoy today. The purpose of this paper is to describe the creation of stars, destruction/ life cycle of stars and our star the sun. Within this last century, we have been fortunate to have the great minds of Einstein and Hubble who made valuable contributions to our current understanding. Also with this century, we have been blessed with tremendous advancements in technology that has contributed to the exponential growth in the knowledge of astronomy.…

Throughout this essay the theory of plate tectonics will be discussed extensively with key references to the volcanic and seismic events and how they are a direct result of the movement of tectonic plates. There will also be discussions on some of the visual evidence there is for the tectonic plate theory, such as the mid-Atlantic ridge, with particular reference to its formation, as well as a detailed explanation of the development of the tectonic plate theory and why it is so widely accepted as fact. There will also be large numbers of annotated diagrams to help explain and clarify some of the ideas put forward in the text as well as making the topic easier to understand as the text will be directly related and aided by the diagrams.…

Earth's outer shell, long thought to be a continuous, unbroken, crust is actually a fluid mixture of many irregular rigid segments, or plates. Comprised mainly of cool, solid rock, these enormous blocks of Earth’s crust vary in size and shape, and have definite borders that cut through continents and oceans alike. There are nine large plates and a number of smaller plates. Of the nine major plates, six are named for the continents embedded in them: the North American, South American, Eurasian, African, Indo-Australian, and Antarctic. The other three are oceanic plates: the Pacific, Nazca, and Cocos.…

Any one who has learnt astronomy divides them into fixed stars and planets, and form in his mind a conception of the planets of the solar system rolling round the sun, and of countless other greater suns than ours, each of which may have its own planetary system, occupying the more distant realms of boundless space. By help of the telescope he can map out the seas and mountains of the moon and of the nearer planets, and the spectroscope tells him the elements of which the stars are composed, The botanist finds the plants at his feet and the trees above his head full of interest. The entomologist, zoologist and geologist enrich the stores of their minds by the study of insects, animals, and fossils. Indeed there is not one of the long list of modern sciences that does not open the eyes of the mind to wonders undreamt of by the uneducated man.…
