MY PORTFOLIO
IN
ENGLISH CLASS

I

Preface

English has always been one of my worst subjects. I would always second guess myself on the correct writing method and what punctuation to use and when to use it. Taking this English class has allowed me to analyze and reflect on my work. My first essay I received a B grade. An option to revise the paper for a better grade was given. This allowed me to see my errors and correct them for improvement. The second essay was my interpretation of the story “Hills Like White Elephants.” Surprisingly there was instant improvement on that assignment. I had received an A grade without any revision needed. That felt really good to know I had the potential to do better. That was my motivation getting through the semester. The progress in my work does show, except on essay #4. I had written a lot of fragment sentences which brought my A work down to a B paper. Honestly I didn’t really take time on that assignment. It was typed up the night before it was do and that was sloppy on my part.

I have combined all the work that I have completed throughout the semester. The final exam required the class to produce a individual portfolio. My portfolio contains my thoughts on my free-writing experience, how I chose my Book Reports, how I wrote all six essay assignments, two essays I feel are my finest work, and a letter to Mr. Wahi telling him what grade I think I deserve for this English class.

The article titled “Brazil Seen Beating US in Soybean Trade as China Buys” discusses the rising production of soybeans in Brazil. The US is currently the largest grower of the product and therefore holds a comparative advantage in trade amongst nations. Rising supply from Brazil will create competition for the business of the largest demand which is held in China. “Production in Brazil climbed 53 percent in the past decade, compared with 7 percent in the US” (Javier, Chanjaroean, 2012). In 2012-2013, Brazil is said to produce 81 million tons of soybean as compared to 77.84 million tons in the US which portrays Brazil’s comparative advantage (Javier, Chanjaroean, 2012). China has imported 59.2 tons of soybean in the year ended September 30th of which, 45 percent were produced in Brazil and 39 percent were from the US. China utilizes soybeans to create meal for livestock and fish, and to produce cooking oil. It is clear that the US is losing its competitive edge on the production and distribution of soybeans mainly because it no longer possesses the comparative advantage in production. This analysis will discuss what enables a country to rise above its competition via the creation of comparative advantage in trade.…

The following are three essays that I worked on during the semester. Most of it remains the same, while some of my ideas have developed. The only major changes made were redirecting the ideas in the Where is Waldo Now essay. In English 1102 I struggled with a lot, Professor Grant really challenged what I thought I knew about writing. Being that English is my second language, language barriers normally do not reflect in my speech or writing. I felt that this semester really showed me that I still had work to do. Passive voice, comma slices, forming arguments, and grammar are some of the many skills that I worked on during this semester. I attended the Writing Center as often as I could; I also asked questions during office hours. I worked on perfecting these skills in my other classes as well by reading out loud. By exploring these different options my essay grades improved 15 points. Hopefully my portfolio and future papers reflects the time and practice I’ve put into my writing.…

The most single important piece of knowledge I have gained in English class this year was the fact that if you work hard enough and put effort into your work, in the end, it will result in good things further ahead in the future. My level of effort on my assignment this year so far has been not so great than what I wanted it to be. I can say that it’s due to the fact that I am partially lazy and I may not find the topic so interesting but either way, one has to do the work and you might as well enjoy it. I didn’t actually do my best quality work. I who have like to try, but sadly I did not. My best moments I have had in class was when we all read “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and when we watched the movie version of the…

By using this I have discovered what my goals and dreams are. I wanted to pass this class and go on to college but that's not going to happen if I fail english. I realized that all that busy work she was giving us wasn't actually busy work. She showing us how hard it can be in college and most of the material now that I come to think of it helped me with everything I did in that class whether it was vocab or learning to write a better thesis statement. My goal for that class was to pass with an 80 or high by the end of each marking period and to not slack on all my work and to do it well and on time. Now I actually do my work ahead of time so that I don't forget and I have time to go back and look over it and sometimes I have a little free time to myself. My current grade in my CCC English 102 is an 89 and so far i've been doing things days before they are actually do so I make sure it's…

My mind was very weak and I couldn’t focus so it left little time to study. I have gotten back in a grove of things since Christmas Break and school now is going great. I had to focus on the bigger picture staying in college and running track so now I have dedicated all my time to study, I have had this approved by my work. I have also retaken 1 of the 2 classes that was hurting my GPA, the first class is Math and so far I’m doing great in it and I am dedicated to get a B in that .The second class I am currently taking is my English Class and I am averaging an B in the class with only 2 papers left, which is a big improvement from the original grade of an…

This class has taught me many things about myself along with many necessary skills needed while writing. I know now that, through hard work and determination, I can achieve what I might think to be impossible. While reflecting back on my initial writing abilities, I see the weak, uneducated style of writing. Each essay shows my progression and improvement, and, after a while, the class began to become much easier. Today, after practicing throughout my essays this semester, I believe that I, in fact, have…

In regards of the revision for the portfolio assignment, I chose to revise my critical autobiography. I chose to revise this document because I see it as one that offers a decent chance for improvement. With that being said, it was the first essay that I had ever written at the college level and during that time I found myself to still be writing at a high schools standards. I Feel I have improved greatly as a writer over the semester and revising this assignment would allow me to prove how much better of a writer I have become.…

My work from the beginning of STEP to now has drastically changed especially in my writing. I never enjoyed writing essays because I did not do well with writing under pressure. After completing my essay, I felt confident about what I produced. However ,when my essay was handed back, it was noted that I lacked vocabulary, figurative language and my sentence structure was poor. After being in class, I have improved on my essay writing skills. I used more vocabulary terms than I usually would in my essays, had better sentence structure, and completed the entire essay with time to spare to check it over. In addition I learned that i have been using seven deadly writing sins in my writing. Continuously writing and having my peers edit my work helped me eliminated those sins from my writing. When school starts again, I will be prepared to write a timed essay with the new skills I have attained.…

For my portfolio the two minor assignments that I decided to put in were my argumentative paragraph on the play Macbeth, and my personal language and literature essay. The major piece of work that I have put in the portfolio is my Macbeth essay. The reason I chose these pieces was because they were the three that I feel were the most interesting, two that I had the best success on, and one that I struggled on. The piece of work that I did the best on was my Macbeth essay. I achieved the goal that I had set for myself to get, which was a 70% on the essay. I feel that the reason I was able to achieve my goal was because I was able to explain my points well and I did not wait to the last minute to complete the essay. The reason I decided to put my personal language and literature essay in was because it was my first grade 11 university essay and it was also my worst. By doing this essay I realized that I cannot leave all my work to the last minute because I will be unable to get the piece edited, my mark showed this. The last piece of work that is in my portfolio is my argumentative paragraph on the play Macbeth. I decided to put this piece of work into my portfolio because I feel I did alright on the assignment, but I had the ability to do better.…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

    Literacy Sponsor

Before I took Freshman English 1203 class, I never knew what a literacy sponsor was. I didn’t know that my father was in fact my literacy sponsor either. Reading the book Writing about Writing has fully helped me to understand what a literacy sponsor is. One of the Authors in the book, Deborah Brandt claims a literacy sponsor to be, “any agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach, model, as well recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold literacy—and gain advantage by it in some way”(334). The literacy event that happened to me was negative, but has changed the rest of my life for the better. I can’t imagine what my life would be like today if I didn’t follow my dreams instead of my literacy sponsors dreams.…
