Assign. # 1
1. Make a research on the food/hunger situation in the Philippines.
According to the studies conducted by the “International Food Policy Research Institute”, the Philippines has showed a decline on the Global Hunger Index (GHI) over the past years – from 19.9 in 1990, 17.4 in 1995, 17.7 in 2000 and 14.0 in 2005. Recently the score peaked at 13.2 in 2013, but despite the relative decline of the score, the hunger problem in our country remains a “serious” issue that cannot be disregarded.
Other key facts to be noted to gain a better perspective on the hunger situation of the country are:
a. The Phil. Is no. 28 in the GHI rank despite the downward trend.
b. The share of children less than age 5 who were underweight was 20.2.
c. Under –five mortality was reported as 2.5% as of 2011.
d. Under nourished Filipinos accounted for about 17% of the total population.

The government acts as the commanding force in combatting hunger in our country. They possess the resources and power to enact laws to further eradicate hunger issues which focuses on the root causes. The drawback is that the proposed action plans are slow to put into action because of the government system. While on the other hand, the NGOs are the ones capable of filling the weakness of the government in terms of immediate action. The NGOs serve as the “front liners” on the battle against hunger for they can take action immediately compared with the government. Although the group or area that benefits from the actions of NGOs are smaller, still this
