Anytime a question of jurisdiction is involved, it is important for agencies to work together and share information to solve the case. It is not uncommon for the Federal investigators to get involved in child abduction cases. In this particular case, Florida senator Paula Hawkins tried to get the FBI involved in the search for Adam Walsh. The FBI was reluctant to interfere in the case however. If Hollywood PD was searching for a suspect somewhere out of state then the feds would be more than happy to lend a hand (Standiford & Matthews, 2011, p. 149). In 1988, FBI Deputy Director Alan Burgess advised that the Adam Walsh case had entered into the new nationwide database known as VICAP, the Violent Crime Apprehension Program. The FBI-VICAP became the national repository for violent crimes, collating data on homicides, sexual assaults, missing persons, and unidentified human remains (Standiford & Matthews, 2011, p. 164). In 1988, the Walsh family received a letter from Toole confessing to the crime and trying to extort money in exchange for the location of Adam Walsh’s bones. The letter was given to Detective Hoffman and he filed the letter away citing a lack of physical evidence. Several years later, when the Walsh Family spoke to the Michael Satz at the State Attorney’s Office, he advised that he was not aware of the letter. The book demonstrated Detective Hoffman’s failure to share information based…
It has been approximately twenty months since 2001s September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, and still victims' bodies are in the process of being identified. In matters like this, forensic scientists are forced to "bring out the big guns." Researchers can compare DNA samples from bodies to those taken directly from the victim: from hair, a toothbrush, a family member, and etcetera (Whitfield 6).…
A young 17 year old girl named Karla Homolka met 23 year old Paul Bernardo at a restaurant in 1987. By late 1989 Paul and Karla were engaged as a happy couple, while Bernardo was raping numerous women in the Scarborough region with Homolka’s approval. In total, he admitted to sexually assaulting 14 women and being related to 53 charges in total. Paul wanted Karla’s younger sister’s virginity because Karla wasn’t a virgin. In July 1990 Bernardo and Homolka served Tammy a spaghetti dinner laced with Valium stolen from Homolka’s workplace. These drugs rendered Tammy unconscious as Bernardo raped her. This first attack lasted only a minute before Tammy became conscious again and bernardo was forced to stop. Homolka stole animal tranquilizers from her work and after their family Christmas dinner, Bernardo and Homolka served Tammy the drugs through beverages. She began to choke on her vomit while being raped by both of them and died. This was one of their first videotaped acts, and they were both let off free after Tammy’s death was ruled an accident.…
Jose Baez was Casey Anthony’s defense attorney, had to convince the jurors that Casey, who has been found guilty in court in the publics opinion for years, was not a murderer, but it was a different story. Casey Anthony didn't fail to report her daughter missing because her daughter was never missing at all. She really died in a tragic swimming pool accident, one that the entire family was complicit in covering up. The story is that Caylee Anthony died on June 26,2008, when she drowned in her family’s swimming pool. As soon as Casey came around the corner and when back, she say George Anthony (her father) holding Caylee in his arm. A Florida jury found Casey Anthony not guilty of first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie. As so often happens in high profile cases, the jury was wrong. Casey clearly murdered her daughter. Her mom, Cindy, reported that Caylee was missing on July 15, 2008. Casey’s cover story was unbelievably ridiculous. When Casey’s mom, Cindy, confronted Casey at Casey’s boyfriend’s apartment, Casey actually claimed that a random baby sitter nobody had ever met had taken Caylee away over a month beforehand.…
Amanda Knox was your average college student. Like many others, she went to college to “find herself.” When an opportunity presented itself for her to study abroad in Perugia, Italy, Ms. Knox was eager to apply. Most students come back from these programs excited to share their experiences, but Knox found herself completely distraught from what she had gone through. On November 1, 2007, Amanda Knox and her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, had been accused of the sexual assault and the murder of Meredith Kercher. The scene seemed to be very disordered and muffled with blood spread on the walls and her throat cut up by a kitchen knife. The controversial murder case was brought up to the highest court in Italy, The Supreme Court of Cassation. There are many different pieces of evidence pointing to her guilt. Further, her lack of an alibi only confirms she is guilty of the crime.…
Unsurprisingly, the police officers did not accept the mother’s excuse and arrested her for putting her son in danger. She has since been released.…
In some ways, the Casey Anthony trial reveals the way that media influence, including the way it is presented online, affects public perception. When one looks at the pages and information that pop up when one searched for information on the trial, a great deal of attention has been given to the way that certain commentators in the media, like Nancy Grace, tried to focus on the inconsistent and, most would say, deplorable behavior of Anthony and the tragedy of the death itself to draw ratings, but far fewer actually focused on the objective legal facts of the case. Thus, when someone sought to find out about the trial, whether through television outlets or online, quite often they were presented with a sensationalistic view of the case, rather than commentary that revealed the problems that the prosecution had with its case, like the lack of an established motive or cause of death, the very issues that prompted the jury to acquit. However, because these issues, or other very basic legal concepts like reasonable doubt, were not given their proper coverage during the trial, most people were outraged with the verdict and believed that the jury had been made of ignorant people, when in reality, their acquittal seems reasonable in a legal context.…
Amber Hagerman was riding her bike near her Arlington, Texas home on January 13, 1996. The beautiful nine-year-old was abducted in front of her home. The abduction was witnessed by a concerned neighbor and Amber’s brother, Ricky. As the neighbor contacted the police about the kidnapping, Ricky went to tell his parents what had occurred. Amber’s parents could not just sit and wait for information. They knew they had to get the information out to the public. They begin contacting the media and the FBI. Four days later the family received the news that their daughter’s body had been discovered in a storm drainage ditch. The abductor in this case has never been found. Amber’s parents created the organization, People Against Sex Offenders. It was established to force Texas legislature to pass stricter laws to protect children. The United States…

Something new was also used in this case, dog DNA. During the investigation, police learned that Taylor had been walking his dog around the time Leanne’s body was placed in the woods. Forensic examiners found dog hairs on Leanne’s body. The dog hair DNA sample was sent to a university in Texas. It produced a partial profile for a dog.…
On the 1st of October, 1980, Azaria Chamberlain disappeared from her campsite at Ayers Rock. Her parents, Lindy and Michael Chamberlain, claimed that a dingo had taken her. In the months and years that ensued, the Chamberlains faced innuendo fuelled by the media, undeserved public shame and an unfair verdict handed down by a jury who had been confused and persuaded by the police, forensic experts and media outlets. Reliance on circumstantial evidence, conflicting interpretations of forensic evidence, questionable evidence by so-called experts, finding an unbiased jury after a trial by media, over zealous policing, and not all available evidence presented at the trail resulted in the guilty judgment.…
Child abductions have always been an open doorway for the media to make a moral panic arise. Some research has been done about child abductions and moral panics, especially in the US. When 9-year old Amber Hagerman was abducted and murdered whilst riding her bike in Arlington, Texas on January 13th 1996 in a parking lot with her brother. Her brother returned to the grandparent’s house, but Amber never did. Her dead, naked body was found days later and she had a slit throat.…
