Friday Night Lights

I can’t even begin to describe football life that exists in Odessa, Texas, home of the Permian Panthers. This town devotes so much time into the team and places so many expectations season after season. If the Permian Panthers do not win a State Championship, then it is considered a disappointing season. The book covers players lives on the field as well as off, the history of Odessa, and how a town comes together because of football. H.G Bissinger follows Permian in the 1988 season on their run to a State Championship in Texas. The book starts out with Permian facing its arch rival, Midland Lee. Boobie Miles was the superstar at the beginning of the season, being heavily sought out by major colleges such as Texas A&M, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. He suffers a knee injury in the beginning of the season and could never recover. He quit the team two days later. Permian loses the game 22-21 and is in danger of not making the playoffs, something unheard of in Odessa. Head Coach Gary Gaines is questioning his job security. In order to be a successful football team, you must have one player who is the general on the field, the quarterback. Mike Winchell was very smart and got offers from schools such as Brown University. He seemed to break down when he was under enormous pressure during big games. Don Billingsley is also followed briefly, he is the teams starting tailback and is the son of Charlie Billingsley, who had in 1965 helped Permian reach the State Title. Don tried to follow his father’s footsteps, but found difficulties on occasions by fumbling the football. Ivory Christian

and Brian Chavez are also big names on the team. Ivory has enormous talent but hates football with a passion, but it changes when he is recruited by TCU. Chavez is the number one student in his class, something unheard of by a Permian football player and is attempting to go to Harvard. In Odessa, racism was a huge factor as well. The school did not become

Jerry’s success started when he was young and decided he wanted to work hard enough to achieve what he wanted to achieve. Jerry Rice was born and raised in Starkville, Mississippi, as the son of a brick mason. He developed his hands while working for his father. Jerry caught bricks with one hand and two hands teaching him hand eye coordination at a young age. Another attribute to Jerry’s success when he was young he ran to school and home from school everyday. This was a 5 mile trip there and 5 miles back. One more story that was believed to be true about Jerry is one day in school the principle saw Jerry running in the hall. According to his book "Rice" (written with Michael Silver), the principal tracked him down for skipping class,[3] but when he called his name the startled Rice sprinted off running, after seeing him run, the principal decided to let him join the football team or be punished. Jerry decided upon football and the principal told the school's football coach about his speed. The truthfulness of this story has been questioned. This was believed to spark Jerry’s very successful football career. From hear on out it was like he was on a mission to basically define success and show people you don’t have to be the fastest or biggest you just have to strive for what you want with hard work and dedication. In High school Jerry caught the eyes of college scouts from numerous division 1-aa schools around his area. Jerry Rice attended Mississippi Valley State University from 1980–1984. He became a standout receiver and acquired the nickname "World", because there wasn't a ball in the world he couldn't catch. Statistics from his college career are sparse, but the College Football Hall of Fame website claims that Rice, as a sophomore in 1982, caught 66 passes for 1,133 yards and 7 touchdowns. That was his first season playing with redshirt freshman quarterback Willie Totten, nicknamed "Satellite". Together, Totten and Rice would become known as "The Satellite…

Friday Night Lights’ Boobie Miles and Oklahoma Sooner Marcus Dupree have quite the similarities when it comes to their football glory. Boobie Miles and his Uncle L.V. had dreams of Boobie turning professional and being a highly paid running back in the NFL. Marcus Dupree had similar goals and dreams as the media, during his college career, was making him out to be the best to ever play the game. In his high school days Boobie suffered a sickening blow to his knee that set back his dreams of playing in the pros. Boobie struggled to get back onto his feet; his Uncle L.V. was the only one that could lift Boobie’s spirits about playing in the NFL. For my response I decided to write about the film Some Like it Hot. Previous to this class I had never seen a film with Marilyn Monroe featured in it. After watching this movie I was glad that I picked it because all of the actors did a phenomenal job. This movie was I feel did a really good job in displaying the transition of sexual attitudes in the 1950’s. Also in Some Like it Hot, Marilyn Monroe does a really good job pushing cultural boundaries by taking the typical conservative look and making it sexy. These were just some of the cultural changes that she had contributed in this film.…

Twin Peaks was not a typical television show in the early 1990's. Most television shows are made up of characters that are so pretty, so rich, or so cool that they become dehumanized and unrealistic. However, the characters in Twin Peaks are the exact opposite. They are unglamorous, odd, and sometimes just plain silly. Were the creators of Twin Peaks trying to break away from the use of common, stereotypical characters? Well, they were actually taking an old idea and turning it around. Just as the characters on many other shows are so perfect they are unrealistic, the characters on Twin Peaks are so odd that they are also unrealistic.…
