Growing Up: Reflective Essay Example
I never understood adults. They drink water that burns your throat and set straws on fire and sip the air. When they get together they are always loud and they pay me less attention. Yes, I thought all adults were weird, until I met my Uncle Clinton. He liked to play the drums and he wore army pants and t-shirts with funny quotes or pictures. Uncle Clinton had a funny cartoon giggle when he laughed and love to eat all kinds of junk food. We always had fun together. We watched cartoons and played video games. He was almost as old as my mommy and I never thought that a grown up would ever understand us kids. One day my family decided to have a barbeque. At every family gathering the adults like to sit at a long rectangular, wooden table and play dominoes. My uncle liked to play too so he sat down with the adults as well. Then, it suddenly hit me; I knew how to play dominoes. Why couldn’t I play with the adults? This is my chance to prove that I am worthy of their loud laughs and conversation. I have the skills to act like an adult.
“ Let me play, I know how to play”, I bothered my mother while tugging on her shirt.
“ No sweetie this is for adults, go watch the smaller children”.
“Uncle Clinton, you know that I know how to play please ask them if I could play”, I begged my uncle.
“Hey everyone”, my uncle said confidently, “Theresa said she’s got more skills then all of us put together and if you don’t let her play you all are just scared to lose”.
I felt much better. I wanted to run to my room and put on my moms red heels and princess make up, but then I would lose my chance and nothing was going to take this from me. I was having fun for a while but the adults held weird conversations. They talked about TV shows I didn’t watch, they spoke big words I haven’t learned, and other words I wouldn’t say. I played okay and my uncle was there to make sure I played good, but he knew what they were saying and I didn’t. I knew he didn’t have time to explain every

Mr. Greger made up a game just to infuriate Carrie, he called it “Layup War.” It was where you had to make the best lay-up in a group of two to move up. Carrie started at the bottom and never moved up the whole time when she had clearly made the best lay-up most of the time. Mr. Greger decided who got to move up and who didn’t. “I guess that Carrie is the worst at ‘Layup War’ in the whole world! No one had ever in the history of the game has not beat one person! I mean, she couldn’t even beat Tod or Garry!” Mr. Greger boomed at the end of the game, like always getting Teddy’s name wrong. Mr. Greger chose the wrong time to say that though, because the secretary had just walked…

As I walked up to the first holes tee box I wiped off my drivers head cover pulled my driver out of my bag put my bag down I put my ball and tee in the ground. I setup my stance looked down at the ball looked down the fairway and hit the ball as hard as I could “whack”! The ball went soaring through the air. Watching it as it kissed the center of the fairway. I looked back at my uncle with a smile I said,” beat that”! “Ok I will,” He said with a chuckle. My uncle then teed his ball up and gave it a hard swing “flub a dub get over the tub” he said as his ball sliced into a water hazard. My uncle would always say funny things that would make me laugh and relax. My personal favorite was the time when we were fishing on mile lacs lake. We had lost our windsock and he said, “Well I guess we'll have to use Zach’s girl friends underwear”! After we golfed a few holes we started to talk about our lives and how we're doing. I told him I was having a rough time because my grandfather had just died. He then said “loosing a person is a tough thing but you have to thank God for the time that you had”. I…
