CYP 3.4 – Support Children and Young People’s Health and Safety

1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services
There are many factors to take into account when planning healty and safe enviroments and activities for children and young people. The first to take into account is the individuality of every child and the different needs, age and abilities of every child.My setting have a few children with special needs who have specilist equipment but also have access to the other activities on a one to one basis with a member of staff. We also have some visual cards, use basic sign language and hand gestures to assist with communication. There is constant supervision when an activity takes place, with enough staff to comply with ratio requirements. Most of the activities have aims and objectives that links to the EYFS.
SPECIFIC RISK
If a child had a hearing impairment I would use the visual cards to make aware of health and safety. I would show them a visual card of a picture which makes it clear you should walk and not run in the nursery. At my setting there are also pictures around the toilet area which show children how to wash their hands. There is also a pregnant member of staff which all the staff ensure they are safe and minimize any risk to her.
PARENTS/CARERS
I would make sure parents and carers have information about their child and the activities and routine their child participate in. If English wasn’t their first language I would provide information in their home language.
OUTDOOR AREA
A risk assessment should be carried out every morning and eveing, the room and equipment need to be checked on a daily basis and removed if broken or need repairing. The room must have suffient light and air circulation and all doors should be alarmed and secure to alert staff when opened. Any visitors have to report to the office and signed in and be told the fire drill procedures and
