An assessment has to be carried out to show that learning is taking place. The initial assessment will show me the learner’s knowledge, skills and capability in the hairdressing industry. The easiest and most effective way to show their understanding is by demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of the criteria that has been given. This can then help me and the learners to see if they have fully understood, and if not is should encourage the learner to ask questions. Sometimes a learner will need guidance to understand what exactly they have to learn, and if they are on track and how they can improve their skills/ techniques. For this to be effective it means that a thorough assessment will need to take place.…

When assessing learning it is important to have an understanding of initial assessment, formative assessment and summative assessment. Initial assessment is about finding out the learner’s needs and particular learning requirements which should be done prior to the programme commencing to see if any support and guidance is required. It also involves ascertaining the learner’s particular learning styles, competence as well as gaining information on the learner’s prior knowledge and misconceptions through diagnostic assessments. It may also be beneficial to find out why the learner wants to take the course. Skills scans can be used to measure the skill level of the learner both vocationally and for employability.…

When making an assessment we need to pull on a number of skills to ensuring that the correct level of learning has been conducted by the trainer and that the learner has under stood the information given. The assessor has to be confident that the learner is also able to recall the information therefore giving them the skill set to conduct the role they are undertaking. The trained person should then leave the course with the new understanding and have thoughts on how they can apply the skills and improve in some cases the tasks that they will now undertake with their new knowledge.…

Johnston has proposed the concept of three main types of hospitality (industry) operations based on the hospitality exchange process: product processing operations, customer processing operations and information processing operations. Most activities are a combination of all three, albeit in different proportions. An accommodation operation is for example predominantly a customer processing operation, with very little product and information processing. Whereas a foodservice operation is a product processing operation, with a significant element of customer processing, and limited information processing.…

Dubai’s vision is to establish a world-class food safety system that helps provide safe food to the residents and the several millions that visit the Emirate each year. We envision a system that ensures the highest standards of food safety - from the port to the plate. We would like the system to be so comprehensive and appealing that others are encouraged to use it as a model. Our vision will become a reality only when the government, food industry, service providers, educational and research organisations and the consumers collectively commit to work together and apply sound principles of food safety based on science and research. We have begun the process by promoting a positive food safety culture among food establishments in the Emirate, by urging the management to be responsible and accountable through our proprietary Person In-Charge (PIC) program, which we introduced in 2010. The responsibility is not only with the PIC but also with other food handlers in the establishments, their owners, regulators and also the consumers. In other words, it must be stressed that food safety is a shared responsibility involving all the residents of the Emirate. Through the Food Code, we are now building on the foundations laid by the PIC and other regulatory programs, which arm them with the necessary knowledge about the systems and processes needed to ensure an effective food safety culture. An integrated approach is necessary to ensure food safety from the place of primary production up to the point of consumption. The Food Control Department of Dubai Municipality will ensure that regulatory programs are science- and risk-based as far as possible. The Food Code is designed to assist the Person In-Charge (PICs) at food establishments to understand their obligations and to carry out operations as per the requirement. The Food Code has been developed also to help the food industry and the law-enforcement officers…
