The Hobbit, written by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, describes a quest that Bilbo Baggins and his friends made. Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist of the novel, was one of the many heroes of the quest because he had many of the characteristics that made him a hero, such as his courage and intelligence. Bilbo Baggins wasn’t the only hero of the novel, but he could be considered the most important thanks to the heroic actions that he made through the adventure. First, we are going to begin defining what a hero is and why Bilbo could be considered a hero. Then we are going to mention the others heroes of the novel and the heroic actions that Bilbo made throughout the novel.
Firstly, heroes are, according to Wikipedia, “…characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self-sacrifice, that is, heroism—for some greater good of all humanity,” however according to Word Reference dictionary a hero is, “a person, typically a man, who is admired for their courage or outstanding achievements.” Both sources coincide that a hero needs to be brave. A hero also needs to be smart, strong, lucky and most of the times had an extra ability that made him especial or superior from the other people or in this case characters.
