Dip NVQ Level 3 HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE HSC 2028
HSC 2028 - Move and Position Individuals in Accordance with their Plan of Care

1 Understand anatomy and physiology in relation to moving and positioning individuals
1.1 Outline the anatomy and physiology of the human body in relation to the importance of correct moving and positioning of individuals

1.1
Muscles in human body is like the motor which supports or assist the bones at the joints to move and work. When the muscle pulls it moves the bones at particular joints, which establish the joints to move about.
The contraction of the extent which the The direction which the bone of the joint move depends on the contraction of the muscle. Muscles on the other hand is affected by mobility; Which means that the more use your muscle the more flexible and active it becomes, but with reduced mobility the muscle will be weak and becomes stiff.
This is the reason why physiotherapy is required for exercises on stiff bones to bring it back to life, for example people with stroke, arthritis or accidents.

As a PA when supporting the clients moving & handling and positioning activities, I always put it in mind that muscles can only move the bones at a joint as far as the joint allows. For example, I am aware that the elbow and knee joints have limited movement; which can be painful for the clients and cause damage to the joint when trying to extend these joints beyond their range.
I am aware that nerves are delicate structure which can easily be damaged through poor moving and handling. For example when I am massaging a stroke client’s hand or leg I always careful when massaging in other not to pull and damage it

1.2 Describe the impact of specific conditions on the correct movement and positioning of an individual
The impact of specific conditions on the correct movement and positioning of an individual depends on the nature of the illness of the clients.

The anatomy which is the physical structure of the body and the physiology which is the normal functions of the body help us to move our limbs. Muscles work like leavers and this allow the bones at a joint to work like hinges. When moving someone it is important to remember that the muscles can only move the joint as far as the bone will allow them.…

Our bodies have lots of bones and muscles and these work together to help the body move. Every part of the body has certain muscles and bones that will work that part of the body. They work like hinges or levers to pull the muscles in the correct direction. When our bodies get older than become slack making movement more difficult and become slower. The importance of muscles in relation of moving and handling is that they are to stop fractures. Using correct procedures for moving and handling reduces the risk of sprains or muscle strain. Muscle can only move bones as far as the joint allows if this is pushed beyond its range it will cause pain and damage the joint. Nerve fibres can be damaged easily and these send impulses to the muscles, which enables the muscle to contract and relax these can be caused through poor handling and moving techniques. People must never be dragged or pulled suddenly as this may cause severe damage to the ligaments and tear tendons which can cause severs pain. Putting to much pressure on a persons arm or hand when moving them from one position to another may cause the bones to fracture this can also happen if there is an accident while moving them for example using the wrong size sling on a hoist and the person falls out. ◦ 1.2 People with dementia need to be told what is going to happen and the task should be carried out in stages explaining everything as you go along.…

Starting in athletic position, or the ‘start phase’, ankles are slightly dorsiflexed, knees flexed slightly, hips are flexed, and both the lumbar and cervical spine are extended. Shoulders are abducted at a ninety degree angle, and the shoulder girdle has slight upward rotation; the radioulnar joint is pronated, while the wrist and fingers are extended. All motions in the first phase are done bilaterally. While in the first phase, the great toe and lesser toes are both in the flexed position. The flexor hallucis longus is isometrically contracting the great toe while the flexor digitorium longus isometrically contracts the lesser toes. The muscles performing dorsiflexion in the ankle are the antagonist muscles including the gastrocnemius and soleus. This is an isometric movement in the sagittal plane. (Floyd 303) The knee is slightly flexed at about a thirty degree angle. The primary muscles used for this movement are the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and vastus intermedius. This constant movement is also an isometric contraction performed by the antagonist muscle group in the sagittal plane. (Floyd 278) The hip is flexed and the biceps femoris, semitendinosis, semimembranosis, and the gluteus maximus isometrically contracting. Both, the lumbar and cervical spine are held in anatomical position mainly by the erector spinae. (Prentice 734) The shoulder is…
