Contemporary parenting roles
Becoming a parent is a major life change.
Infants quickly teach adults how to meet their needs.
Babies are active participants in their development.
Parents internalize their roles (expected behavior patterns,
obligations, and privileges).
Spouses / Partners help each other learn the roles of parent.
Parenting does not come naturally.
Contemporary parenting roles
Many parents experience role strain (conflicts that someone
feels within a role) because of:
unrealistic role expectations
parents are expected to succeed and feel guilty if they “fail”
decreased authority
parents have less authority than in the past
increased responsibility
parents are blamed for children’s misbehavior
Some states hold parents responsible for damage
high parenting standards
