The novel that I am reading is “I’m Not Her” by Janet Gurtler. It is about the struggles a young girl, named Tess, goes through when she finds out that her sister, Kristina, was diagnosed with cancer. Tess has always been looking up to her older sister, because her sister was always the center of the crowd, sporty, beautiful one and Tess was always the smart, un-popular one. It was always hard on Tess, so when her sister was diagnosed with cancer, she felt as if she could finally be known. All of Kristina’s friends started befriending Tess, now that her sister wasn’t at school. Although Tess loved the popularity, she did have a lot of trouble too. Not a lot of people were asking how Tess was doing about the whole cancer situation but there was one person who was always there for her. His name was Clark. After talking days upon days with him, Tess began to want to be more then friends with him. But Tess also knew that she had to be there for her sister and didn’t have time to have a serious love life at that point in time. Then Tess met a boy from school named Jeremy. Jeremy has a little crush on Kristina, but is also now good friends with Tess. Tess was wondering why he would always talk about Kristina, and then he finally informed her that he always hangs out with her at the hospital when he is visiting his mother, who also has cancer.…

Throughout history, men dominated the planet. Their ability to withstand hard physical labor launched males as the superior gender for centuries. As society progressed, the necessity for physical labor decreased. Today, only a select few jobs require hard labor while the education system influences the job market. This change in society opens the door for women to excel at the same pace as men, however, men continue to insist on enforcing outdated gender roles.…
The hardships of slavery were not easy for anyone whether they were male or female. However, these experiences of hardships differed greatly among black males and females in the south. Male and female slaves had their own ways of dealing with the depression of slavery by passively or actively resisting against their masters. Also, they had different types of work assigned to them usually based on gender and value. Finally, they had different sexual experiences on the plantations. The following paragraphs will further explain these differences in the life experiences of the black male and female slave.…
“Hamadi” by Naomi Shihab Nye is a story about a girl from Palestine named Susan, trying to adapt to life in the United States. Susan cherishes her Palestinian traditions and heritage by incorporating aspects of her culture into her American life. This is demonstrated when Saleh Hamadi shows up, “With flushed red cheeks and a sack of dates stuffed in his pocket”(Nye IL14). Dates in Palestinian culture represent prosperity and are often included in the diets of Palestinians. Although Susan is now living in the United States, she doesn’t assimilate to American culture or beliefs.…
Never Cry Wolf But Always Cry Truth When Wolf pups are born they are both deaf and blind, weighing only one pound, and then when they grow up they are ferocious killers, or are they? In the book Never Cry Wolf (1963) by Farley Mowat. Mowat was sent out by the government to go see if the wolves were killing all the caribou. Mowat use of ethos, humor, and personification to make me believe that the wolves are more curious and not a ferocious killer. First, Mowat used ethos to convince us the wolves aren't the real problem.…
The speaker of this poem is going through an identity crisis. They are dull and don’t see themselves having a personality. They see women in beautiful saris in the beginning of the poem and revel in how exotic and interesting they are or appear to be. Simultaneously they are conscious of their own bland way of life…
In this essay I intend to explore the narrative conventions and values, which Oliver Smithfield presents in the short story Victim. The short story positions the reader to have negative and sympathetic opinion on the issues presented. Such as power, identity and bullying. For example Mickey the young boy is having issues facing his identity. It could be argued that finding your identity may have the individual stuck trying to fit in with upon two groups.…
In today’s society, people tend to group one and an another into different categories according to their own social identity. An individual’s gender identity refers to which group where one belongs to. The attributes assigned to both males and females are different because of gender differences. In “Becoming members of Society: Learning the Social Meanings of Gender” by Aaron Devor, the author argues that factors such as beliefs and behaviors help differentiate the sexual identity of a person. In addition, Devor views sex as an instrument of determining gender. It is believed that there are only two types of sexes that exist. Which are male and female. On the other hand, “Girl”, by Jamaica Kincaid, the mother tries to forces prescribe behavior,…
Everyone has a choice what they do with it is up to them. Sharon G. Flake wrote the book You Don’t Even Know Me which is a very intense and emotional book. This book speaks of topics one would not hear regularly. Many parents and the reader wonder why would they let a teenager read this book. She wrote this for young adults because she probably experienced this or saw many of her friends go through these kinds of problems. According to research by State Farm, every twenty-eight seconds a youth drops out of school. Many of them get jobs to survive, and many live at their parents until they can live on their own. As you may know, almost fifty percent of the kids who drop out of school end up either in a gang or in jail, and/or even homeless. The book also deals with teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.…
In the argument,”Ain’t I a Woman?” by Sojourner Truth, the author herself talks about her true life events during the slavery era. During the early 1900s, America endured a time of slavery where blacks were owned by whites and discriminated against for years. Black men during the early 1900s; were able to speak to their owners, establishing rapport and in return received better treatment than black women. Women during those times, black or white, were not able to vote or hold highly respected positions in the community. Although discrimination was directed towards blacks and women, black women specifically endured far more discrimination from both Caucasian men, and black men.…
In The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin the character Louise Mallard has to be gently told that her husband has died tragically. Her sister Josephine tells her that her husband Bentley died in a railroad accident. Louise Mallard cries and mourns her husbands death but in the back of her mind, she is thinking she will finally be free. Although Bentley was always good to her, she can now have a life of her own without feeling oppressed. She feels that men and women oppress each other even if they do it out of kindness. She fantasizes about how her life will be without her husband and hopes that she will live a long life. Suddenly the door opens and Bentley walks in. He is alive and was not in the accident. Louise mallard dies of a heart attack the doctors say it was from happiness.…
The article “Poetry is Not a Luxury” by Audre Lorde talks about how important poetry can be to the human race. While most think poetry is just words put together, she romanticizes poetry into something much more. While she does say it is necessary for all, rather than a simple hobby; she tends to focus more on how it can affect the female race. The feminist theory is slowly weaved into this article. She allows us to believe that as an individual, my voice is who I am, who I can become.…
*This poem seems to address the oppression of women and/or how women are viewed in society. Past and present. Works such as “Color Purple” relate to same subject matter.…
The character of Jamal’s mother shows the effect of freedom and oppression through her daily life as a woman in Afghanistan. This is shown through the quote “Girls playing soccer is a crime. I say. Almost as big as mum and dad running an illegal school.” This quote shows how Jamal’s mother is running an illegal school as the government does not allow women to become teachers. This is shown through the restrictions she faces which the government have made rules. The book has shown the reader what life is like for the women living in Afghanistan and how harsh the government are towards women. It has also shown the reader how very little rites women have and how many rites men have compared to women.…
