I Have Walked a Thousand Miles by Gerda Weissmann Klein: Book Review
Title: I Have Walked a Thousand Miles
Author: Gerda Weissmann Klein
Genre:Non-Fiction
Number of pages: 261

The book I Have Walked a Thousand Miles, by Gerda Weissmann Klein, is a very touching book, that almost made me come to tears. Through this book, you can tell the hardships that the Jews went through during the Holocaust. This book mainly focuses on a brave and strong thirtneen-year old girl named Elli, who is sent to Auschwitz with her family. She has to face many terrible challenges, such as having to work long hard hours, and was given dirty water and moldy bread to eat and drink. I would highly recommend this book for educational purposes. There is so much that you can learn about the Holocaust, by just reading this book. For example, within the first few chapters, I learned about how Elli and her family were taken from their home. Because this book is written from Elli’s point of view, this gives you a better perspective of not just what Ellie faced, but what many other Jewish girls just like her faced. I would recommend this book because by reading this book, you would have a good sense of idea, of how the setting looked, and the feelings and emotions that went through Elli. The reason I was able to feel as if I was right there witnessing everything that was going on, is because of the visualizing details. It was like having my own personal t.v in my head. Because of the visualizing details, this made me get an understanding of what was going on in some parts of the reading. In conclusion, this book was a very good read, and is worth the time and effort. You won’t be sorry reading this book. I think that it carries all of the traits, that a book should have. Since this book is written of someone that went through the Holocaust, I think that it would widen a lot of people’s eyes as to know that these events were in fact real. Well, I hope that you will give this book a chance and even recommend it to other people. Not only can this

Where they would make them do hard work, so much that they would die. And if they didn’t died working, either way they would killed them, without a reason. That was the perspective from what the Germans did, however I didn’t knew how hard the Jews fight for their life, and all the things they did outside the concentration camp in order to survive. For example, they even had to cross a lake that was immense, they didn’t know how deep it was going to be, or if there would be something in the water like some type of snake or something. The only thing they wanted was to survive, and they were able to go across the lake, with all the bags and weapons they had. Also how all of them worked together to survive, for instance, when they crossed the lake, they tied all the belts together. Therefore they were able to grab it and go all together, so they wouldn’t get lost, or drown. How the Jews were able to build houses, nurseries, and a school into the woods, and live for more than two years there. They had to overcome many things in order to survive, and they never lost hope. Last of all, this story changed my perspective of the Holocaust, to that the Jews were really strong, all the things they went through, and how they were able to overcome many of their…

A Long Walk to Water is an inspirational story written by Linda Sue Park. I relate to this story because as Salva made his long, tiring journey he had inspiration from family and friends. His friend Mariel who helped him make progress towards Ethiopia. Sadly, his friend was taken by lions while they slept. Also Salva’s uncle gave him inspirational words which helped him through not only the walk but the rest of his life.Uncle also perished due to war. People like that also exist in my life. My parents, coaches, and friends inspire me to keep on going and push past my limits to achieve what I’ve been searching for. When trying out for a team, working for school, or fulfilling personal goals I will always have someone there to influence me to…

However, no one can doubt that this novel does in fact have a lot of literary value. This novel has contributed a lot to nonfiction/memoir novels that are about being a victim in the Holocaust. He vividly illustrated his predicaments in the novel, and was a not afraid of being a little graphic where it was necessary. He would describe dead victims clearly, like this following excerpt: “The two men were no longer alive. Their tongues were hanging out, swollen and bluish. But the third rope was still moving: the child, too light was still breathing… And so he remained for more than half an hour, lingering between life and death, writhing before our eyes…That night, the soup tasted of corpses.” This novel contributed to the gruesome yet real category of Holocaust victim memoirs. It was descriptive enough to be like a movie playing in my head while I devoured each word. It was a real piece of literature that doesn’t let the readers forget the cruelty and torture that the Holocaust’s victims had to face.…

The Holocaust destroyed 11,000,000 people's lives. It’s hard to imagine people being killed just because of their religion. Men, women, the elderly, children; all Jewish families were separated. In his book “Night”, Elie Wiesel, who was separated from his mother and sister, describes his experiences and the inhumane conditions he endured at the concentration camps at the hand of German officers. As a result of his experiences during the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel changes from a religious, sensitive little boy to a spiritually dead, unemotional man.…

In fact, this is an extremely difficult book to read and it's not the kind of book you want to read when you're feeling down or having a bad day. Essentially, it's a personal account of a Holocaust survivor, Mr. Elie Wiesel. It's his autobiographical story of struggle for survival while in Auschwitz, the largest of the Nazi concentration camps.... and after reading it, I'd say it's a miracle that anyone survived at all.…

Recently, I have completed reading your autobiographical novel, Night in Religion class. I had a wonderful time reading your book in defiance that you encountered many unfortunate events. I know I can never understand what you underwent; however, I do possess a great deal of sympathy for you and hope that you have had a wonderful life after the Holocaust. Your life in the concentration camp, expressed through your book has exceptionally inspired myself and my classmates. You are a major inspiration and leader for people going through difficult times in their life. I am very thankful that you wrote your book and I was given the opportunity to read it. I really enjoyed the book, because I think learning about the holocaust is very interesting, especially learning from the experiences of an actual survivor. A strength of the book was that it had good details of her experiences. A weakness of the book was that it went too fast at some parts, and the book was very short. I learned that Blima was a very strong person. It is important to know about Blima, because we can learn from her about how to be strong in tough…

With all that was happening in Europe at the time its good to have someone that survived the events that happened in Germany during WWII. Levi Primo was that survivor and is now regarded as one of the best sources of what really happened in the concentration camps (he was in Auschwitz in 1942). He does a great job right at the beginning drawing you in and earning your trust when he explains "This very book is drenched in memory . . . it draws from a suspect source and must be protected against itself" (Levi, Primo, The Drowned and the Saved, 34) he is saying that these are just memories and stories, they become distorted with time and influence. Also the only people with the real full experience were the ones who died (drowned) and the survivors…

First, after analyzing details of the book "Night", I feel several things need to be read and acknowledge by every human being in order to prevent future mass genocides such as the Holocaust. It seems to me that genocide starts as just a small idea and in no time it spreads just as a wild fire would, it grows rapidly. It's absolutely disgusting to know discrimination amongst differences still exists in today's society and eventually leads to the same conclusion. "Night", I feel is a great attempt to end discrimination and genocide which is why I truly admire what you have done by reliving your horrific experience in order to teach the world more about the Holocaust from a different perspective.…

I would like to read more books on this topic because while reading this book I found the facts that the book had very interesting. One of the things that the book said was that more than 6 million Jews were killed during the holocaust. I found this fact captivating because I asked myself, why were so many people killed during a short period of time? If Iread more books on the topic of the holocaust i think it will help answer why so many people were killed. Even though there isn’t a logical answer to this question reading more books on this issue will help answer why people thought they should kill 6 million Jews. I also found it interesting how Anne and her family had to hide from the Nazi’s for their own safety. I have heard that during…

While reading it I learned a lot about what happened in World War II. I felt like I was there with them in the annex afraid to make a noise in fear of being caught. I feel like I have a better understanding of the Holocaust and how horrible it was. The characters all had vastly different personalities that each contributed something to their journey. It was if I knew them, especially Anne who it seemed like was my best friend telling me about something she experienced. I even felt annoyed when Mrs.Van Daan would make her insulting remarks. Knowing these people were real and not just made-up characters really changed how I looked at it. I felt like I was attached to them. Throughout the diary I was able to relate to Anne’s issues with her sister and her parents, and I think other people will…

The book told all about of his tragedies in his life while giving depth on what he did on his free time like he was a great painter and wanted to live off of his painting but, he couldn't. It talked about what made him hate Jews so much and why he blamed everything on the Jews. I didn't like how it back and forth from his personal life for a few pages then talk about the war between Germany and the U.S. I didn't go into depth about what Hitler liked to paint and the of are he painted.…

This is a stunningly beautiful novel of a girl living in Germany during the holocaust, suitable for both teenagers and adults to read. Zusak left me breathless with his descriptions and I always felt connected to the characters in some way or another. It is educational but does not lack strong characters with which you can connect with emotionally. You are taken on a heartbreaking journey through the lives of several characters, many of which you grow to love and feel for. Several times in the book I was bawling my eyes out or crying for pure joy, it really gets to you on an emotional level. It has holocaust themes (obviously) but I would say that they are quite mild. People who are sensitive to these themes can quite easily skip over the details and continue reading on as the book will still make total sense. Reading this book my views of WWII completely changed--as this is not an Anne…

It reminded me how much I love to read war books. One thing that I really liked about this book was that it included the letters he sent home to his family. I liked that he included every detail of what was going on, like when he talked about that the his commanding officer allowed him to "check for broken lines" when he was actually looking for food. I liked that he had his wife translate it, I just thought that was cool that she was able to help him with his life story. I thought he was very trusting when he said that he was open with telling people he was part Jew. I liked it when he explained what things were after he talked about them. When he started talking about how not all of the German soldiers were actually really German it made me realize that Hitler actually did have power in a lot of places. I enjoyed hearing when he talked about when he was in the prison camps and he told what it was like in the prison camps. The thing I didn't like about the story was that when he got a letter from home he didn't show it like he did when he sent letters home. Another thing I didn't really like was that he didn't go further into his life after the war. I also didn't like that they didn't go back to talk about how the Jews were doing in his attic. Besides all that I didn't really have anything that made it so I didn't like the story. One of the parts I thought was really cool was when the tanks were coming towards them and he remembered his training about digging the hole, that part was really cool. Another part that was really interesting was when he was in the hospital getting special treatment, and then the secret service asked him to become a spy for them. The worst part was when he started to get really sick, but you knew he was going to live because in the book he hadn't married yet and it said his wife is the one who translated the book from German. Another thing I didn't really like was that parts of it were in…

During the Second World War a diary kept by a little Jewish girl became famous. It is called "The Diary of Anne Frank," and was later published in the form of a book. It is a historical record of sufferings endured by the Jewish people who had to go into hiding on account of the persecution by Hitler and his Nazis. The cruelty with which they were treated in the concentration camps and the misery and pathos of their lives is aptly reflected in this diary. This diary is therefore an important document, showing us the inhumanity of the Germans and the deplorable lot of the Jews in Europe during the Second World War.…
