The speech “I Have a Dream” was delivered by Martin Luther King on the occasion of the centenary celebrations of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on 28th August 1963. It falls into two parts- the first part portrays the American nightmare of racial injustice , the second half paints the dream of a better, fairer future of racial harmony and integration. During the course of his speech King portrayed the racial injustice faced by the Negroes. They lived in poverty in slums. They lived in exile in their own land. They were denied the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They were victims of unspeakable horrors of police brutality. They were not allowed to stay in motels or hotels. Further they did not have right to vote. Such were the appalling conditions of the Negroes.
