I Persist and I Will Win
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for considering me to be your next class president.

Since freshman year, I have been a passionate advocate for our student body. When a food poisoning epidemic broke out on campus, I crafted the petition to demand better service from our food providers and better oversight from school administrators. It was unacceptable for the health of our peers to be compromised by consuming the food in our own cafeteria. Many of you agreed with me, and the petition got the support of 85% of our student body.

Since then, the administration has been more proactive about monitoring health and safety regulations in the cafeteria. As a result of my urging, the administration has also began publishing the ingredients and nutrition facts of all food items offered in the cafeteria so that students can make healthier, more informed choices about what they eat.

The following year, I was elected as Sophomore Class Representative to the student council. One hallmark achievement of mine was increasing accountability for student council expenditures. You can now find the student council budget on its website, as well as a monthly update of actual transactions made. This accountability initiative allowed us to reduce prom ticket prices by $20 for each student. Once we realized that we had funds left over from previous allocations, we redirected the money to prom to make the important event more affordable for every student.

If elected, I will continue to fight for justice, transparency, and equality for our student body. I will create a channel of student representation on our city’s School Board, which supervises our school’s administration but does not offer an opportunity for student voices to be heard. I will reform the course registration system so that selections can be made electronically, increasing efficiency and minimizing frustrating errors. I will continue the fight for healthier, more nutritious school lunch offerings in our

Recently our state school board has been considering different options to improve our school’s breakfast and lunch menus with more nutritional and healthy foods for our children to eat. Jessica Hemauer’s essay, “Farm Girl,” tells her life story of living on a farm through her eyes as ten-year-old child to the time of her early adulthood. The purpose of this piece is to teach the importance of life's responsibilities to children, mainly female, and young adults who may not be familiar with the challenges life can bring and to promote the benefits you can gain by overcoming those obstacles. Hemauer uses pathos, which appeals to emotion, logos, designed to engage our logic, and ethos, to prove its credibility, to convey that though growing up on a family farm was a struggle day-to-day, it was valuable life lesson because it shaped her into the well-rounded and hard working person she is today.…

In addition, school interventions such as offering nutritious menu in the cafeteria have not gone so well. Many schools provide healthier options to students, but unfortunately they also offer unhealthy foods and beverages to them. Improving healthy school lunch would be hard. “The first issue is cost. School lunch is bound by federal requirements and a strict budget. And local, sustainably grown ingredients often cost more than standard school lunch fare. Some districts have dealt with increased food prices by serving more vegetarian meals. Others have limited their special menus to just a few times a month, rather than everyday” (Radio, 2015, para. 5). When they sell these healthy menus to children they cannot afford because the price is…

Congress has not only put strict regulations on what is served in schools, but what is sold in vending machines and in school stores, such as our “Snack Shack”. The president of the School Nutrition Association in Washington said in a letter “It makes no sense to set one set of rules for the cafeteria and another set for the hallway.” he also said “Failure to apply the same rules to all foods sold/served on the campus throughout the school day will erode the efforts schools are making to ensure the nutritional quality and the value of school meals (Klein 1). The reason that these new regulations on lunches is because the obesity rate is quite high in Americans. In adults obesity is 35.7% and in Children its 17%.…

Kids have always felt harshly towards their meals provided by the school. A topic brought up often, after years of students receiving nasty foods and ‘’mystery meat.’’ Students have been begging for years for the cafeteria to start serving respectable meals without the students having to wonder what they are putting in their bodies. Now the state is planning for a new ‘’healthier’’ menu in the future. They can say what they want, but, we know that this just means whole grain and other sad attempts to improve the food.…
