I Was Only 19 Notes

Redgum – I was only 19, Notes

This is a very powerful song about what all Vietnam veterans went through in the Vietnam war and all the emotions and experiences they have gone through
This song has so many language techniques and powerful lines
It emphasizes the fact that composer of this song was only 19 and he was so young and frightened to go to war
The power illustrated in this song is War
The use of repetition is used almost after ever verse, “God help me, I was only nineteen” the effect this gives on the listener is it makes you feel what the composer is conveying you to feel. You feel the pain and the grieving the veterans went through and it makes you realize that some men were so young to go out and experience such things that no human being should go through.
The use of a rhetorical question is used, “And can you tell me, doctor, why can I still not sleep?” This gives the effect of pity. You pity and feel bad for what he went through. It is stating that he cannot sleep because he was so frightened and stressed about whether he was going to live or die. He asked this question to a doctor because all he wants is professional advice and reassurance but in war he doesn’t have any.
A lot of imagery is used to make the audience really imagine what the composer has been through
“A four week operation when each step could mean your last one with two legs. It was a war within yourself” this is very powerful couple lines of the song. This is stating that he was on a 4-week mission through mines and each step was taken with precaution, as there were mines everywhere, if you took the wrong step you could have had your legs blown to pieces. It was a war between yourself because you would always be fighting against yourself to either take a step or not.
“Frankie kicked a mine they day that mankind kicked the moon, God help me, he was going home in June.” This is stating that the composer’s mate Frankie has stepped on a mine and he has passed away.

Armatage uses imagery of war, such as 'parachute','bullet','unexploded mine'to illustrate the soldiers injuries and emotions. 'Only then' is repeated at the beginning of each stanza to represent the slow process that the wife has to take to be allowed into the soldiers thoughts and feelings armatage uses alliteration,'handle and hold' to emphasise just how much care he needs. He describes a bullet as a foetus 'of metal', this metaphor represents life and how war and violence can ruin and control a life.'tightened','sweating' and 'closed' all describe the soldiers fear and so he breaces himself and armatage ends with 'only then, did i come close'…

Upon researching for Civil War era songs, I noticed there was a pattern between the lines of the songs. They were pleasing poetry, with a simple arrangement to be played on the piano and was easily memorable to sing to others. They ranged as far from political ideas, to heroes in war, loved one's misfortune, and plenty more. Each song I listened, I felt the emotion that was poured on to the writing. I can see how it resonated in many citizens and how it the words would spread so quickly. These songs were expressing how many felt during that time period. The war was so bloody and many were injured or killed, it was a time of anguish and suffering- whether that be economically, politically, and/or socially. I think the song, Lorena, does accurately reflect the era. People could relate to it and it subtly opens the idea that everything the person is exposed too, makes them slowly get detached from their lover. They can't control it, but they can still remember the sweet few memories of the past to hold on to, to keep their sanity in this war. The song Lorena was very popular during the Civil War due to this, as the soldiers began to think of their…

On the last stanza, he was describing what the accident left his brother. His fragility causes bruises on his head, “Wearing a poopy bruise on his left temple,”(19). He may not have any other scars, but it was clear that the accident really did kill him. How for the last time, he sees him peacefully lying on his bed, he realized how life was too short, his brother who was only four years old, only had four years to enjoy his life is now gone, “He lay in the four foot box as in his cot. No gaudy scars, the bumper knocked him clear. A four foot box, a foot for every…

One Vietnam story I found interesting is from a Vietnam Veteran himself. His name was Allen J. Adrian, Sioux Falls, SD. He describes to us how he voluntarily signed up for the U.S Marine Corps. Once he was in his training camp he said he would regret being there. He would ask himself questions on why did he do it and how can he get out of it. He said that once he accepted the fact that he had to stay, he adjusted to the changes and feelings. He uses the Vietnam War more of a positive experience rather than a bad one, one that he will never forget.…

This song portrays how we as Americans should represent our country, soldiers or not. We should be proud to be Americans and represent our country in the best possible way. It also shows that we should be there for each other, to stand beside each other and to do what is right. If only all Americans could have the bond for each other that our soldiers have, we would be a much better country. They fight beside each as brothers and sisters for our country and protect our rights.…

Due to such an astronomical casualty during the world war I, recruiters came up with many creative strategies to elicit more people willing to fight for America. One of the best tools was through sensational poems. Prominently, ‘Flander Fields’ gave the readers a sense of obligation to accomplish the mission of the dead soldiers and more, the wish of anyone in the country. ‘New Georgia’ by Randall Jarrell, on contrary, is a personal story, in which encourage any type of person to join the armed forces for either glorious fame or mentally relief. Although each poem has distinguished words styles, tones, both drive citizens to enroll in the military for meaningful legacies.…

The vulnerability of someone’s well-being explores examples of tragedy as the reader is drawn to feel and empathize for their pain. During the war, there were many circumstances where a soldier came home from the war and was not the same person, his physical and mental well-being were stripped from him like tape and changed forever. This is evident in Owen’s poems ‘Disabled’ as one misfortune of war are the soldier’s physical health after returning home from serving their country. Owen writes “He sat in a wheel chair, waiting for dark, and shivered in his ghastly suit of grey, legless, sewn short of an elbow”. This soldier is now more vulnerable than ever, he cannot move, he is paralyzed by the war, his thoughts are clouded by the images foreseen at his time during the war.…

As the opening stanza develops we can see that the men are injured but ‘limped on blood-shod.’ This shows that the soldiers are injured and that they have to keep marching forward with wounds that are sealed with dried up blood. This image gives us a very graphic account of how hard life was in war and our sympathy develops. At this point Owen builds anger in the reader as we are shocked by the horrible conditions that the soldiers are forced to endure. The exhaustion of the soldiers is clearly conveyed as they are described as being ‘drunk with fatigue.’ This shows that they are so exhausted that they cannot even walk in a straight line. The opening stanza clearly conveys the horrible conditions the soldiers lived in and allows us to feel great sympathy for them.…

"Anthem for Doomed Youth" serves as a reminder to the public that no matter how heroic they make dying at battle seem, no matter how they dress it up, people are losing their sons, brothers, and fathers to war. Too often war is glammed up to discount the actual pain of war, too often we hear about the "heroes" that die in war and forget the fact that someone has lost a loved one. "Anthem for Doomed Youth"portrays to the reader the darker side of war. "What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?/ Only the monstrous anger of the guns." This first line of the poem sets up the rest of the poem by posing an image of people being slaughtered and the nature of war to be full of mass deaths.…
