"If we are to teach real peace in this world...we shall have to begin with the children."
Because I agree with Gandhi I negate the resolution. Resolved: In the United States juveniles charged with violent felonies ought to be treated as adults in the criminal justice system
My value is Human worth or human dignity which is defined as respecting for the inherent worth of individuals. Human worth is the most important value for today’s round because it looks out for the well being of juveniles as they are human deserving to be given the respect and dignity inherently given to all people.
My Criterion is Pragmatism or that the truth of a doctrine (the good of an action) is based on its practical consequences. Juveniles must be treated as what they are Juveniles, adolescents, children, because they are mentally different than adults. This relates to the resolution because the word “ought” is used to imply morality, and Pragmatism clarifies that it is moral only when the good of an action is based on its practical consequences. The government has a duty to protect the individuals in the society by ensuring that they are given their natural rights and the human worth inherently given to all. By treating juveniles in the juvenile justice system we are ensuring they are treated practically, with respect for their worth. In addition treating them in this system benefits the whole society as is effective, practical and moral. Because treating juveniles in the juveniles justice system is not only practical and moral but benefits both the individuals and society as a whole it is the obvious choice.
Contention 1
Trying Juveniles as an adult is harmful, not successful and impractical.
Sub point A
Juveniles in the juvenile justice system are not safe.
“Most youthful offenders will be physically and/or sexually assaulted within seventy-two hours of admission to adult correctional facilities,”
