Racial profiling is a major problem not only in the United States, but all over the world. Racial profiling both angers and upsets me because I feel that no matter what color a person’s skin is or where they come from, we are all equal. I don’t feel that anyone should have an advantage over someone because of stereotypes. Brent stated, “I was surprised, embarrassed, and dismayed all at once. Her flight made me feel like an accomplice in tyranny. It also made it clear that I was indistinguishable from the mugger who occasionally seeped into the area from the surrounding ghetto.” By saying this, it shows that he was automatically discriminated against because of his skin color and that he was judged and categorized with criminals just because his skin was black. I feel that I can relate with Brent because I would feel the same way in that position. When I’m in an area surrounded by other races they oftentimes look at me with disgust and it saddens me because they are “judging a book by its cover” instead of getting to know me beforehand. Another way I can relate to Brent Staple is because he found a way to prevent these racial discrimination's from those who feared his presence at night by suppressing his rage and making himself appear less frightening. He is putting his hurt and anger aside for the benefit of others, “Over the years, I learned to smother the rage I felt at so often being taken for a criminal. Not to do so would surely have led to madness. I now take precautions to make myself less threatening.” I feel that I relate to him in
