A new mathematical theory? The title of the latest 3d movie? Or is it another conspiracy theory involving the end of the world? Relax. Its just the fancy name for a rather fancy change that the Department of Education presented for the basic education curriculum.
K+6+4+2 (or K+12) simply means that the new and improved system will now feature the following modifications: a year in kindergarten, the same 6 years in elementary, 4 years in what will be called junior high school, and the addition of 2 years of what is called senior high school, thus having Grades 1 to 12.
The plan was proposed by Education Secretary Armin Luistro, the first phase of which will be implemented immediately next year, while the final phase will be on school year 2016-2017. For that plan to be put in motion, DepEd will need an astonishing Php 60 billion for infrastructure, teachers, and textbooks in publis schools alone! First of all, there is nothing wrong with DepEd for coming up with this scheme to boost the country’s stagnant educational system. In fact, they should be lauded for reaching this decision: that is, looking for a solution and doing their job instead of sitting on their laurels and pocketing their pensions. This will also make Filipinos more globally competitive and relevant, since it will eliminate the need for further enrollment in back classes and other additional testing just to qualify for an overseas job.
There is no question: we badly need a paradigm shift in the system. But, why now?
Are we ready for such an immediate and gargantuan task?
And, most importantly, is DepEd up to the responsibility of allocation? Whatever jargon they may call their program, it still goes back to the issue of whether they can pull it off. Do we have enough materials and manpower to get this show on the road?
