Persuasive Speech: Pros to Paying College Athletes
Thesis Statement: College Athletes should be paid for all their hard work and all the money they bring into their schools.
I. Introduction A. Do college athletes get enough credit for what they do? B. Today, I am going to tell you why paying college athletes should be legalized C. I am sure there are many kids in this room that play a school sport. How would you feel if u were making millions of dollars for your school but were not getting paid at all? College athletes are employees and deserve to get paid based on the National Labor Relations Act.
II. Injuries A. This is one main reason that college athletes don’t go pro. 1. First off, an injury could end the career of any college athlete; so many talented athletes never get paid for their hard work. 2. Also, only 1% of college athletes go pro; one big factor being injuries. B. Injuries also can cause players to miss games, which would prevent them from reaching the highest potential. 1. About 47% of collegiate athletes miss games in their season due to injuries. 2. The most popular injury for an athlete in any sport is a muscle pull. C. Out of all of injuries athletes suffer, concussions are one of the biggest, especially in football. 1. About 61% of college football players since 2007 have suffered a concussion. 2. A concussion takes on average 5 weeks to recover from, so it could ruin an athletes season.
III. Athletic Programs A. Athletes bring large amounts of revenue into the school, so why aren’t they being paid? 1. College football and basketball teams make so much money that they pay for the entire athletic program. 2. On the other hand, the players work for unpaid labor. B.
