Asoka was one of the greatest rulers of ancient India. He was the grandson of Chandragupta Maurya of Magadha who established the first Indian empire. Chandragupta reigned for twenty-four years before relinquishing his throne in favor of his son, Bundusara (Asoka's father), who left no noticeable mark upon the empire. My thesis would be that Asoka was an enlightened ruler and not a ruthless conqueror.…

King Kamehameha was the man who unified all of Hawaii and settled it under his rule. He was not in line to be the next chief of a kingdom, but by 1810, he conquered all of the Hawaiian islands. Using his intelligence, kindness, beliefs, power, and his resources he became a strong and effective leader. Mohandas Gandhi (Gandhi), the leader of a nationalist movement against the British rule of India (Encyclopedia Britannica), did what he thought was right. Just like the leader Hawaii has to thank today, Gandhi used his beliefs and intelligence to gain the independence of India. Both leaders worked hard for what they wanted and the two are seen as effective leaders today.…

Asoka quickly became converted to Buddhism as a result of the Kalinga war. At the conclusion of the war, Asoka sought a Guru due to feeling a great crisis (document C) along with a stirring remorse for his prior actions. He was now setting high ideals for himself, the ideals of power and peace. Once under the Bodhi tree, Asoka gave rich gifts to the poor. Asoka also consulted with local communities about proper governance about good conduct (also document C). By seeking Buddha, Asoka proved his underlying remorse for the war and with his growing understanding, he was able to begin reforming his mind as a political order. Asoka wished to make up for his mistakes with the Kalinga war, therefore reversing his viewpoints and moving forward (document C). Soon after, there was no longer opposing power within the Mauryan Empire, as document B informs, “Furthermore there was now no opposing power withing the empire. The people of the frontier were generally too weak to consider a war against him.” Asoka recognized this and created a series of edicts. Document C was written by historian Michael Wood. Due to the source being a historian, his point of view comes from another persons views, these views being that Asoka was an enlightened ruler because, “Asoka gave rich gifts to the poor.”…

Was Asoka a Ruthless Conqueror or Enlightened Ruler? Asoka, a serious prince of Mauryan Empire, had many different characteristics. After he conquered Kalinga, he was seeking Guru to find enlightenment. Asoka took leadership of the Mauryan Empire in 268 B.C. All those things show that he was an enlightened ruler. The beauty that radiates from the temple is a wonder feeling that left me with a jaw dropping moment. It also gave off a sense of peace and calm, and a feeling of being safe. As I approached the temple it has lovely green gardens to both sides, with little Buddha’s everywhere and a wise saying to the right. It stated, “the best thing in the world is happiness, the noblest deed in the world is forming affinities”, I knew at that moment, I was in a peaceful place. There were stairs leading up to the temple, and I wanted to make sure I took all of them. As I approached the first building known as the Bodhisattva Hall, the delightful smell of the incents burned for the Dharma protectors, and the two green dogs, known as the guardians who are meant to protect, as well. Inside this hall are five statues that are Buddha’s in training that each has a specific significance. Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is a symbol for disciple and practice in our daily lives. Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva has commited himself to taking away suffering. Maitreya Bodhisattva, also know as the Happy Buddha, simply means prosperity and generosity. Avalokitesvara (Guanyin) Bodhisattva symbolizes compassion and loving-kindness. Manjusri Bodhisattva symbolizes great wisdom and the teachings of staying away from wrongdoing. I observed prayer and offerings in this hall. For twelve dollars you can purchase a plate with fruit, a flower, candy, and bracelet…
