Course Rationale: Basic Musicianship is offered by the University of Pittsburgh and meets the Creative Expression requirement for General Education, the course will not count towards a degree in music.
The course is designed for students who have NO musical experience.
Course Description and Goals: By the end of this course the student will understand how and why music works. The student will learn the skills to compose music and will have two of their own pieces performed in class by other students. The student will also learn how to practice and perform on the piano. Basic Musicianship provides each student a keyboard in the piano laboratory in the music building during class and specified practice times throughout the week. During each class the student will participate in group exercises that develop rhythm, piano skills, and the ability to read music. The class will cover the elements of theory and skills for performance. The class will teach you how to play the piano, the skill will only be developed through dedicated practice and demonstration of practice is graded.

Class Dates: Available online
Course Objectives: Students will learn the fundamentals of piano playing as well as the basics of music notation, theory and musicianship (including ear training). The student will also be exposed to a performance environment in this class and work to develop strong practice habits.
Required text: Basic Musicianship Class Piano, Roger Zahab. Supplemental printouts will be provided electronically for which the STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PRINTING and will be necessary to bring to each class.
