Lord of the Flies Essay Example
Jack’s Way “Evil is done without effort, naturally, it is the working of fate.”- Charles Baudelaire In the book The Lord of The Flies by William Golding, many young boys land on an island after a plane crash during World War II causing the evil in each other to come out and separate the kids into two different tribes eventually causing a war between themselves. Jack demonstrates the evil of a powerful and hungry dictator. Jack’s vicious characteristics cause him to make his own tribe, kidnap and torture samneric, and also rallying his tribe to kill Simon. When Jack is not elected chief he decides to make his own tribe. Jack’s evil heart separates the group into his own tribe so he can be crowned king. When Ralph is elected chief on the island, Jack is angered when he cannot be the leader. Jack is determined and decides to make his own tribe where he can be the leader. Jack then yells, “I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too” (116). This quote explains how Jack has had enough of Ralph’s control and how he has left the group and hopes to have followers. It is greatly representing Jack’s jealousy and wanting of dictatorship. Although Jack tries to separate the group into two tribes, he also takes action by kidnapping samneric. Jack’s evil mind wanted to become a dictator so bad, he enforced his rule by kidnapping and torturing samnneric. When Ralph and Piggy make it to Jack’s tribe, Jack is giving orders to tie up the twins and torture them to show Ralph his evil spirit. After Jack captures samneric he says, “Grab them!...the pointed group moved round samneric nervously and unhardilyy…Go on. Tie them”(163). This explains Jack’s ability to be the leader of his tribe, and his evil soul to capture samneric. Jack had to find a way to get to Ralph, and now he realizes that torturing samneric is what really hurts Ralph. Jack’s ability to control is enforced by torturing samneric, but he shows it by

William golding uses many imagery and adjective to portray ways that jacks vicious and savage deeds to other group members which proves that he is innately evil in the book. Throughout the novel we see jack and his archenemy and rival which is piggy who is one of the main characters . “Your talking to much .. Shut up, Fatty!” (Golding 28) This shows that jack is deprived to make someone feel amused about themselves. This relates to the question because it really shows that jacks is really innately evil because all jacks wants to show that he has power and can rule and especially to the people he hates like piggy, he would do anything to hurt him and make him feel bad cause piggy. Despite almost all of the characters going through transitions due to the changed circumstances, Golding depicts Jack as the most explicit figure. “Jack and Ralph smiled at each other…The point tore the skin and flesh over Ralph’s ribs”. Initially, when Jack first shows up on the island, we realize that he is a leader of a choir, marching in military style. Although this foreshadows Jack’s totalitarianism and dictatorship, it still shows the typical characteristics of a typical teenage boy, wanting to take on leadership roles and smiling whenever possible. However, as Jack becomes obsessed with hunting pigs and eventually putting on the mask, he turns savage and gruesome beyond return. The fact that he uses a spear to attack Ralph immediately after Piggy’s brutal death shows Jack has completely lost his rationality and sense of human being.…

The individuals responded to changes quite differently , Jack decided to respond to the challenge by using force/fear to get the leadership role, while Ralph employed rules, morals, and goals to escape the island all while remaining rational. Jack brought to the others protecting, food, and fun, trying to gain their loyalty, he was also set on completing the short term goal of getting food, while Ralph preserve the challenge of getting off island as his main goal and proceeded with ways of completing that with things such as the signal fire. Jack is also very carefree when in contrast to Ralph when he takes the twins “samneric” to go hunting instead of watching the signal fire essential for their escape. When Jack gains power with his hunter tribe towards the end he responded very differently to Ralph whom remained civil and rational but Jack on the other hand relied to instill fear into his boys to keep their loyalty. He beat Wilfred to display his dominance, suggested to use a “littleun” when they played a game where they re-enacting the time they killed a bore. So when put in the same situation Ralph remains civil and ration while Jack in-barks into his primal instincts and reacts on instinct rather than…

The outcome of Jack portrays a negative view of humanity because it shows that greed can lead to violence. Jack’s greed for power led to ruthless killings of innocent creatures on the island. He was filled with hate towards Ralph and would have gone as far as even killing him. This violence was foreshadowed by Jack’s murder of the sow and his indifference to Simon and Piggy’s death. During Jack’s conflict with Ralph, “with full intention, he hurled his spear at Ralph and tore the skin over his ribs” (Golding 181). Jack’s greed had led to his merciless…

Jack is the oldest of the group. He is a tall, thin, and bony boy with red hair and a freckled face. He symbolizes responsibility, barbaric behavior, evil, and irrational thinking. He symbolizes responsibility because he was responsible for the actions of his group, the hunters. As the head of the hunters, it was his job to make sure they were always on task and that they bring food (meat) for the rest of the group. He symbolizes barbaric behavior by the way he treats the littluns and Piggy. The natural instinct of any older human being is to comfort the little children when they are scared, frightened, and unsure of their actions. Jack frightens them even more by telling them that there was a beast that they would hunt it down. He betrays Ralph and the rest of the tribe by abandoning them and creating his own tribe, forcing half the group to join it. He is a savage because of the way he does things to get what he wants. Instead of simply asking, he raids Ralph’s camp to get fire and Piggy’s specs. He is evil because he refuses to hear out Ralph and Piggy and insists that he is right the whole time. Jack almost caused almost all of the catastrophes that happened in the book. He wasn’t thinking right in the way he led his tribe to act. He made them think that acting maliciously instead of being civil was the way to go. In the end, he set the whole island on fire just to hunt down Ralph so he could kill him. Jack had a dramatic change in his attitude that started to be revealed in Chapter 5 when he started to yell at Ralph, broke all the rules, and caused the whole assembly to leave. In the beginning, he was following what Ralph says and he was actually up for helping them get rescued. In Chapter 5 and…

Jack and his tribe are hunting a wild boar in the forest, "The spear moved forward inch by inch and the terrified squealing became a high-pitched scream. Then Jack found the throat and the hot blood spouted over his hands. The sow collapsed under them" (135). He didn’t even think twice before slitting the pig's throat. Hunting has brought out the savage side of Jack which urges him to slaughter other living creatures. His sensitive emotions have temporarily flown out the window and his cruel personally has barged through the door. Jack has serious anger issues. He was upset with Wilfred without giving a solid reason as to why he was mad, “I don’t know. He didn’t say. He got angry and made us tie Wilfred up. He’s been-he giggled definitely-he’s been tied for hours, waiting.” (159). Now, even the slightest mistake will set off Jack. He is in control and if he says to have someone tied up or killed they will do it. Why? He is violent and intimidating and no one wants to question his authority. Jack is a stick of dynamite that is waiting to be lit. During the confrontation about Piggy’s glasses, “Jack made a rush and stabbed at Ralph's chest with his spear.” (177). Boy is this young child aggressive. Jack doesn’t even want to have a proper conversation with Raph. He wants to approach the situation with violence; long gone are those choir boy manners. What happened to the Jack who said they weren’t savages? His dominating and aggressive demeanor have gotten to his head, he has clearly gone power-mad. Cut his throat!spill his blood!” (Golding 152) even though it was only simone who was trying to tell the group important information he had found out. Jack also intends on killing ralph with “a stick sharpened at both ends” (Golding 198). Showing that not only is Jack going to kill Ralph with the stick but he has the other end of the stick to mount Ralph’s head on it. The boys on the island are manipulated to think that Jack is the solution to their fear of the beast. He gives the boys reason to believe that this dangerous creature is roaming freely on the island and deciding to be under his regime will provide immunity from the beast. However, as a dictator, Jack has only his interest in mind and he has a great influence on convincing the boys to believe that the beast is real to gain power and maintain control. The idea of the beast can also be interpreted as propaganda that Jack exploits to attain a totalitarian government. Since the boys; to a great extent; believe in the beast and are induced by Jack to think that Ralph does a poor job of protecting the boys, Jack accomplishes his objective of acquiring authority over a tribe in which he will reign as a…

However in the beginning of the novel, Jack is unable to commit an uncivilized action of killing a pig. Golding explains, “They knew very well why he hadn’t: because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood” (31). This demonstrates that Jack is still tied to civilization. He is unable to stab the pig because his civilized state of mind informs him that killing an animal in such a manner is immoral. However, as the boys become tired with the regularity of eating fruits, the prospect of hunting becomes a necessity. Hunting evolves into a chance to demonstrate power over the rest of the group. Jack is led to believe that his inability to stab the pig is a weakness to his conquest for power, which in turn motivates him to kill his first pig. This milestone causes Jack to crave the hunt and leads him to exhibit cruel behavior. This cruelty ultimately leads to the development of savagery within him and his opposition to civilization. He splits from Ralph’s civilized band to form a savage tribe where he hunts and kills just for the thrill of it. When Jack and his tribe hunt down Ralph, he “viciously, with full intention… hurled his spear at Ralph” (181). Jack fully intends to kill Ralph without a slight hesitation. The thrill of the hunt controls Jack’s thought, which causes him to act on impulse. His intention to kill Ralph is equivalent to slaying pigs. Jack no longer recognizes the difference between killing a human and hunting an animal. As his time on the island passes, his civility…

One part of savage behavior is the hunger for power and dominance. In the novel, Jack is the symbol of hunger for power and dominance. Even though Ralph is in charge, Jack wants to be the one in charge. One example of Jack’s hunger for dominance and power is when he tries to assert dominance over Ralph at the first meeting. Ralph is explaining that there is no one on the island and Jack cuts in by saying, “All the same you need an army for hunting. Hunting pigs—“ (Golding, 32). In this scene, Jack immediately tries to take control, and that is the savage behavior coming out. Another scene depicting Jack trying to take control is when Samneric think they see the beast and a meeting is called. It seems like Jack is going to assume power when he says, “We don’t need the conch anymore. We know who ought to say things. What good did Simon do speaking, or Bill, or Walter? It’s time some people knew they’ve got to keep quiet and leave deciding things to the rest of us” (101-102). He is talking out of turn because he is not holding the conch and he is ignoring the rule. He is asserting dominance by trying to take control and decide how to deal with the beast. He says that, “This is a hunter’s job” (102). Ralph then tells him that it is not a hunter’s job…
