1 Exam duration is TWO HOURS plus 10 minutes reading time. Students may choose to commence writing during the reading time ONCE THEY HAVE CLOSELY READ THE EXTRACT.
2 Text books MAY NOT be taken into the exam. One page of notes on official pro-forma MAY be taken into the exam, PLUS one blank page on official pro-forma for planning purposes at the exam.
3 Section A is Text Analysis. Students will read an unseen extract from a Year 10 novel. Questions will be asked about text structures and features such as but not only tone, mood, purpose, diction, figurative language, imagery, punctuation, narrative voice, structure, and so on … Paragraph answers to the questions are expected.
4 Section B is an analytical essay. Students will select ONE question. Students will then write a structured essay of 11/2 – 3 pages in which they address the selected text specific question.
5 You will be supplied with a separate cover sheet for EACH section. YOU MUST ATTACH THE CORRECT COVER SHEET TO EACH ANSWER.
6 To undertake the exam you will need BLACK or BLUE pens. DO NOT USE red, green, yellow, purple pens etc. DO NOT USE PENCIL.
7 Lined paper will be supplied for your answers.
8 Review the rubric sheets to ensure that you are clear about what is being assessed. Aim to address the outcomes that are specified.
9 Memorise quotations from text/s studied to use in the Part B essay. Short quotations are easier to remember, and more effective in your discussion.
10 Be sure to use quotation marks when quoting from the extract (Part A) and from the text studied (Part B).
