In 1903 the late Mrs. Annie Johnson of Arkansas found herself with two toddling sons, very little money, a slight ability to read and add simple numbers. To this picture add a disastrous marriage and the burdensome fact that Mrs. Johnson was a Negro. When she told her husband, Mr. William Johnson, of her dissatisfaction with their marriage, he conceded that he too found it to be less than he expected, and had been secretly hoping to leave and study religion. He added that he thought God was calling him not only to preach but to do so in Enid, Oklahoma. He did not tell her that he knew a minister in Enid with whom he could study and who had a friendly, unmarried daughter. They parted amicably, Annie keeping the one-room house and William taking most of the cash to carry himself to Oklahoma.…

Deemed as one of the most prolific works of poetry, Still I Rise certainly impressed me and surpassed all of my expectations. Still I Rise is such an inspirational and motivational text in that it empowers its audience to think about the morality of certain beliefs in society as well as empower those who are weak and vulnerable in society. Still I Rise reinforces the idea that racial prejudice is still prevalent in the world we live in today. This poem is exceedingly special and memorable due to the fact that there is a key valuable message from which individuals, from all walks of life, can certainly benefit from. During this response, I will be discussing what I deem to be interesting aspects of the text which include: the portrayal of the…

Jack London is a well-renowned author with titles including White Fang and his most famous novel: The Call of the Wild. London gains his reputation with his style of writing which builds interest in the reader while relating what the characters are facing in the story. This style is also seen in his brilliant short story "To Build a Fire." In "To Build a Fire," London helps the reader to relate to the story by introducing themes that humanity must deal with at some point in its life; ignorance, life-or-death decisions, and a realization of or coming to terms with death. The hardest theme for people to grasp is the realization of death.…
Technology seems to have taken over these days. Smart phones, tablets, Nook, Kindle, MP3 players, laptops, and now smart televisions are just a few of the many advances so far. Hospitals should be using technology to increase efficiency. For example, “Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego and Chula Vista, CA, has implemented a computerized bed monitoring system that allows staff members to immediately fill vacant beds and keep patients moving throughout the hospital.” (some hospitals implement unique measures to improve ER wait times, 2008) By implementing this strategy hospital wait times have decreased. This makes the process more efficient by letting the ER now right away when a bed is available. “At Boston’s Beth Israel/Deaconess Medical…
Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “Favor comes because for a brief moment in the great space of human change and progress some general human purpose finds in him a satisfactory embodiment.”(www.brainyquote.com) Throughout many centuries in American history, at some point or another there has been a great struggle for African- American people. A struggle filled with many disappointments embodied by raw emotion that has built strength and courage in a people where hope seemed unreachable. Some argue the strength and courage attributed to the work and tireless efforts came from many within the race and those who saw a greater vision for them. One noted and extraordinary person responsible for this is Dr. Maya Angelou. This expository essay will focus on Maya Angelou and the Embodiment of Courage, which has a powerful place in the vision of change and progress sought by a nation of people, will illustrate to illustrate how she embodies the concept of courage though her early life experiences, poetry, and speeches. In selecting this topic, I wanted to capture the essence of the Embodiment of Courage behind Dr. Angelou’s speeches. Her speeches make use of words, which appeal to my raw human emotions, while illustrating the progress oppressed people in America have made. The importance of this topic to the audience is due to people having come to fear what they do not understand and she is effective at providing an alternative perspective than those of ignorance and hate.…
As Maya Angelou had said, "I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place."(Angelou). Saint John Paul II was just that. Throughout his life he had felt his call to priesthood and continued sharing his gifts with others. Many others had experienced his blessings and help. Children were also a wonderful gift, whom he had much love for. His Five Loves set an impression on how the world could be a better place. Several people can tell you how much of a hero he had been for the human rights and how he had a great possession of love for others throughout his lifetime.…
Angelou opens her biography with the dreams of a child, whishing she could be white in a white world. She writes, "Because I was really white and because a cruel fairy godmother, who was understandably jealous of my beauty had turned me into a too-big Negro girl, whit nappy black hair, broad feet and a space between her teeth that would hold a number two pencil" (Angelou 4-5). Throughout her youth, she faces a world of prejudice and racism. Instead of embracing her heritage, she wants to be white, because the whites are the people with power and money. The whites were also the people that controlled the blacks and Angelou finds out, often the hard way, as her life continues. One literary critic notes, "Angelou's account of her childhood and adolescence chronicles her frequent encounters with racism, sexism, and classism at the same time that she describes the people, events, and personal qualities that helped her to survive the devastating effects of her environment" (Megna-Wallace 2). While this book chronicles a lifetime of racism and prejudice, Angelou's eloquent use of the language almost softens the blow by making it lyrical and beautiful to read, but the underlying rage and distress at the differences between blacks and…
In “Graduation,” Maya Angelou, an African American writer, traces her maturation during her eighth grade graduation by conveying her feelings and emotions, through the persona of Marguerite Johnson. Not only is she graduating from eighth grade, but she is also graduating from naiveté and moving onto maturity. With an expressive voice, Angelou includes imagery, through the use of similes and colors, as well as juxtaposition in her narrative essay to illustrate the racial inequality between the Negroes and the whites.…
