William Harness is a Professor of Theology at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Harmless exhibits the beginnings of monasticism in Egypt not only by the history of monasticism but through sample writings of the monks themselves. He lucidly portrays the history, politics, controversies, mores and the players involved in the background enmeshed with the formation of monasticism. Although, the author exhibits the false supernatural powers attributed to the monks but leaves little commentary about it. Moreover, Harmless presents them in their imperfect humanity with a tenacious scholarly approach. He untangles the origins of the legends and exhibits the development and maturation of the monastic lifestyle with subsequent contributions to theology. Incredibly, the author delays his criticism of the classical view of the origins of monasticism as a brief final chapter.…

In his essay “Early Monasticism and the Church Today”, Brandon Hammonds, an American Theology Professor at the International House of Prayer University, discusses the origin of the Christian Monasticism. The monastery arose because of the need of the Christians to find a place to pray with God by living absence of human activity. That is why these buildings were made so Christians could live the life they have chosen. I support the Monastic movement because it encourages me how to develop life prayer and develop a strong relationship with God, and it has value to me because I grew up going to Catholic Church.…

Society’s ability to remain culturally distinct lies in the expectations placed on those who make up society. Each value society upholds shapes their society and differentiates them from ‘barbarians’ and ‘foreigners’. These values are self- designated and give society a sense of identity and community. Henceforth members of society begin to view outsiders as bizarre as they do not meet the criteria of their civilization. In St. Benedict’s Rule for Monasteries a sharp division is established between what constitutes being a monk and abiding by the rules and the outside world of secular Christians.…

    Confessor Catholic Church

For my field research and final paper, I went to a Catholic church by the name of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, which is located in Dana point, California. In the 1960’s Father Ozias Cook was the pastor of Our lady Fatima in San Clemente. It was from here that the Father gathered people to build a chapel to serve the people of that area (what is now Dana Point). In the early days as the parish was being formed the Baltimore Catechism was taught along with the traditional Prayer. As the population of Dana Point continued to expand the need of a church that was going to be permanent was pressing. The Building finally officially opened in 1980 to serve the religious education needs of the parish. This included being the only Catholic preschool in all of south Orange County. Over the years, the parish has collected donations and raised funds to expand and grow with the community so that they can welcome anyone that wants to join. The church was beautifully set up and felt like what I would have imagined a Catholic church were to look like. The service was a Sunday night mass that happened at 5:30 pm over Thanksgiving break. I attended the service with my close friend Ema and her family who have been members of this church for years after she had mentioned the church to me.…
