Vocab/People- Jackson/Monroe
Era of Good Feelings- The federalist party fell apart and Monroe won the election by a landslide. He then ran unopposed for a 2nd term. There was relatively no political drama during this time.
Missouri Compromise- The south wanted Missouri as a slave state to have more southern representation in the Senate. The north however, did not. Henry Clay created the Missouri compromise:
Missouri would enter the Union as a slave state
Slavery would be prohibited in any new states north of the missouri border
Maine would enter the Union as a free state
American System- Connects regions together using roads and canals. Helped improve trade and ship goods across the country. Pushed Americans to buy from America.
Cumberland Road- the first government road stretches between Maryland and West Virginia.
Erie Canal- A canal that runs from Buffalo to Albany New York; makes trade easier.
Self Made- Going from rags to riches; Jackson was self made.
Corrupt Bargain- John Quincy Adam was accused of a faulty bargain when he ran for election and Jackson won the popular votes but Adams convinced the speaker of the House to pick him and Adams won the electoral vote.
Civil Servants- People who have served in the Cabinet for a long time and have always been faithful to it. Good workers.
Spoils System- Jackson replaced the Cabinet with people who helped him during his campaign and close friends whom he trusted for advice.
Kitchen Cabinet- The group of people Jackson looked toward for advice; they met in the white house kitchen.
Nullification- Congress passed a tariff tax on imported factory goods from other countries. This forced more people to want to buy from themselves(Americans). The northern merchants benefited but the southerners worried it would hurt their cotton seal and trade with other countries so they disapproved. Jackson lowered the tax but South Carolina still revolted and
