My Grandfather Essay Example
I miss him, a person who always had couple of big round glass, a blue T-shirt, a person who always had a tobacco pipe, sitting under the sunshine and a person who always told me interesting story to make my fall asleep when I was a child. I really miss him, my grandfather. In some sense, he is the person I admire most.
To begin with, my grandfather is very brave. He was a policeman. His team was ever asked to catch a ruffian with gun in the central road of our city. Due to the crowed public around, it was very dangerous to keep the ruffian. Accidently, my grandfather saw the ruffian stay near him. It was a good chance to catch the ruffian, because the ruffian did not notice my grandfather. Hence, my grandfather, with 50-year-old age, struggled to catch the ruffian without considering his safety. Finally, he was successful to get the ruffian, but he was got hinted also. I inspired by his behavior. What I learned from him is I should have passion to my work and be brave when I face any kinds of problem. The problem related to life is the most difficult and conflict problem for everyone. However, my grandfather chose to protect public instead of considering his own safety. I was proud of him. And under his influence, I become more clam when I meet trouble.
Moreover, my grandfather is not only my grandfather, but also my best friends. Indeed, he is very fair towards every family member. When I was a child, my mother attempted to make me to know more and more interests, like piano, dance, draw and something, which actually I do like. I felt uncomfortable about my mother’s action and always had conflict with her about this. When my grandfather noticed these things, he asked my mother and me together to talk about our own idea. I gave some reason that I was not interested in piano or something what my mother pressed me to do, while my mother said she thought these were the necessary skills, a perfect person must have. My grandfather worked like an arbitrator. He

Ulysses Simpson Grant, (1822-1885), American general and 18th President of the United States. Grant, the most capable of the Union generals during the Civil War, was a master strategist. He won the first major Union victories. President Abraham Lincoln staunchly defended him against critics and promoted him to command all Union forces. Grant accepted Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. However, Grant had no disposition for political leadership, and as president (1869-1877) he scarcely attempted to control events. He made injudicious appointments to public office, and official corruption tainted his administration, although Grant himself was not involved in the peculations.…

African slavery in the American colonies first began in the 1670's and 1680's, particularly in the Chesapeake region. However, it wasn't until the 1700's that slavery became a full blown business. Events causing the need for slaves were: the lack of English settlers willing to become indentured servants, the ability of prospective immigrants to migrate somewhere else in the United States, and the lack of open land which turned away potential settlers. The need of the Chesapeake tobacco farmers to have some kind of dependable workforce, almost ANY dependable workforce, led for them to look for "employees" in the Caribbean sugar islands. Since 1640, French, Dutch, English, and Spanish immigrants in the Caribbean had been employing slaves as a workforce. In the European mainland, slavery had been practiced for centuries. It was customary for conquered heathen peoples to be captured and enslaved so that by their bonds they would be converted. However, African slavery truly began when Portuguese sailors encountered non-Christian societies holding slaves in Northern Africa. From there, the sailors purchased these bonded people and took them to the Iberian peninsula where by the 1500's one-tenth of the population of Lisbon and Seville were said slaves. From there, slaves were sent to the Americas to do the hard labor unwilling European settlers refused to do. Before African slavery in the Americas, the majority of African peoples were "Atlantic creoles." Either free, indentured, or enslaved. The term Christian was used to mean a "free person" however, the House of Burgesses declared that "the blessed sacrament of baptism" could not release the enslaved from their bonds. In 1682, Virginia passed a document which declared all "Negroes, Moors, Mollatoes or Indians" arriving "by sea or land" could be enslaved if they were not Christian. By 1775, 260,000 slaves were imported into the U.S. Between the late 1600's and the early 1700's the conditions of slavery in America…

Grandpa always had a reason behind everything he did. He always helped me by talking through my problems with a logical and reasoning view. Grandpa has always helped me to look at both sides of a problem and the possibilities of outcomes and apply things that I already know to the situation before making a decision. Grandpa always has listened to what I have to say and he isn’t against taking advice from me. He always says that he values my input and he will store it in his knowledge bank for future reference. Grandpa is very humorous along with being logical, he always seems to be able to make light of most situations and can help me look at things from a humorous side and if I end up making a bad decision. (Normally, because I didn’t go to grandpa about it before hand.) The best advice I have ever gotten from my grandfather is, when you are making a decision think about 6 months from now, or even 6 years, what is the outcome from both sides; and can you learn from your choice either way? Throughout his years grandpa has always held a positive mind frame and laced life with humor, he always asks what I learned even if I faced a consequence. I believe that my grandfather is one of the wisest men I will ever know. Grandpa always learns and uses past knowledge before making a decision. Abraham Lincoln is known as "The Great Emancipator" who freed the slaves. Yet in the early part of his career and even in the early stages of his presidency, Lincoln had no objection to slavery where it already existed, namely, in the Southern states. As a savvy politician, he always wanted to maintain the union, and he would use any device to keep the country together. However, his views on slavery evolved during his presidency, and the personal opposition towards slavery that he claimed he always had began to show through in his policy. As Lincoln noted in 1864, "I am naturally anti-slavery. If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong. I can not remember when I did not so think, and feel" (Lorence 306). Despite such strongly worded beliefs, Lincoln policies towards slavery often shifted for the sake of political expedience. For example, he pledged that states would be compensated for their loss of property as a result of emancipation to keep the border states from seceding. Still, by 1862 Lincoln had become firm in his convictions that slavery must be abolished. He even pressed for a constitutional amendment to ensure freedom to all the slaves. Lincoln espoused strong anti-slavery views, but he often put what he viewed as the good of the country ahead of the cause. Despite many detours along the way, he proved himself to be "The Great Emancipator." As a self-made politician from humble origins, Lincoln struggled in his early political life to define his identity. He described his childhood as "The short and simple annals of the poor. That's my life, and that's all you or any one else can make of it" (Oates 4). Lincoln felt extremely embarrassed about his background and worked his entire life to overcome the limitations he faced. He made himself a "literate and professional man who commanded the respect of his colleagues" (Oates 4). It is difficult to assess Lincoln's early views on slavery and race because they were constantly changing in an effort to achieve such…
