. List the following values from Chart 1:

a. hematocrit for male with aplastic anemia

b. %WBC for male with aplastic anemia

c. Were the values listed above in the normal range? Why or why not?

a) hematocrit would be 19 (AK)

b) WBC would be .5% (AK)

C) These values are considered extremely low. This male, suffering from aplastic anemia, has a low red blood cell count, white blood cell count, and low platelet levels. (AK) 6. What is the hematocrit for a female with iron-deficiency anemia? Is this value in the normal range? Why or why not? The hematocrit for a female with iron deficiency anemia is 32. The value is not in normal range because normal range is 42%, and lower than normal hematocrit indicates anemia. (KEM)

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate

7. Describe the effect of sickle cell anemia on sedimentation rate Sickle cell anemia has no effect on sedimentation rate. (M.Smith) 8. why do you think that it has this effect?
9. Record the sedimentation rate for a menstruating female. How did this value compare to the healthy individual? Why? 15 mm/hr for the menstruating female and for the healthy female it was 5 mm/hr, for a difference of 10 mm/hr. the reason why this has happened is because when a female is menstruating she can sometimes of develop anemia which van show an increase in ESR. (AL)
10. What was the sedimentation rate for the iron-deficient individual? The iron-deficient person has an ERS of 30mm/hr. (MM)
11. What effect does iron deficiency have on ESR? ESR can be elevated in persons with iron deficieny. (A Darby)
12. What is the ESR for a person suffering a myocardial infarction? or angina pectoris? Person with myocardial infarction has an ERS of 40 mm/hr and a person with angina pectoris has an ERS of 5mm/hr.

Part 1 sought to measure the movement of water in response the addition of various concentrations of NaCl. It was hypothesised that as the concentration of NaCl increases, then the amount of lysis of the red blood cells would decrease. Part 2 aimed to determine how permeable red blood cell membranes were to various solutes. It was hypothesised that as the lipid solubility of solutes (Kether) increases, as does the permeability coefficient. Part 3 of the experiment aimed to produce and measure diffusion potentials across two different membranes of semi-permeability. It was hypothesised that as the voltage increases, as does the log of the concentration gradient.…

You are working in the internal medicine clinic of a large teaching hospital. Today your first patient is 70-year-old J.M, a man who has been coming to the clinic for several years for management of CAD and HTN. A cardiac catheterization done a year ago showed 50% stenosis of the circumflex coronary artery. He has had episodes of dizziness for the past 6 months and orthostatic hypotension, shoulder discomfort, and decreased exercise tolerance for the past 2 months. On his last clinic visit 3 weeks ago, a CXR showed cardiomegaly and a 12-lead ECG showed sinus tachycardia with left bundle branch block. You review his morning blood work and initial assessment.…

Microcytic anemia is defined as the presence of small, often hypochromic, red blood cells in a peripheral blood smear and is usually characterized by a low MCV (less than 83 microns). Iron deficiency is the most common cause of microcytic anemia. The absence of iron stores in the bone marrow remains the most definitive test for differentiating iron deficiency from the other microcytic states, ie, anemia of chronic disease, thalassemia, and sideroblastic anemia. However, measurement of serum ferritin, iron concentration, transferrin saturation and iron-binding capacity, and, more recently, serum transferrin receptors may obviate proceeding to bone marrow evaluation.…

Anemia is a disease state that is characterized by a reduction of hemoglobin (Hb) or volume of red blood cells (RBC’s). The reduction in Hb or RBC’s leads to diminished oxygen carrying ability of the blood. Many forms of anemia exist – the anemias discussed will be relevant to our patient, JJ, based on her signs/symptoms and past medical history (PMH). Anemia can be classified based on the appearance or size of the RBC. The size of the RBC can be determined by either calculating the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of the RBC based on hematocrit and…
