O Brother Where Are Thou?

Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? Vs. Odyssey
The movie, “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” relates to the life of Odysseus, a Greek king. The simplest similarity between Odysseus and Ulysses Everett McGill is that the name Odysseus in Latin is Ulysses. Because they shared the same name many things throughout each stories connect them. Throughout these stories both Odysseus and Everett experience unfortunate events while they are sleeping. In the film Everett was always startled and awoken by the guards because they sound him while he was sleeping. Pete and Delmar related to Odysseus’s following. I found it interesting that Pete was captured and they thought he was killed in a toad form, until they are reunited. I thought that this gave a twist to the main three characters, Everett, Pete, and Delmar.
I believe that the journey of Ulysses Everett McGill connect to Odysseus in the Homer epic. The blind man in the film possibly represents Homer, the blind author of the Odyssey. The blind man was also the first to record and hear the Soggy Bottom Boys sing, when at the time the boys did this for just a few dollars they had needed at the time. The blind man in the Odyssey is the supposed first man to record the story of Odysseus.
Certain Episodes of the film are connected with The Odyssey. The Odyssey starts with Odysseus being trapped on an island, just like the film starts with the boys escaping from jail. This is similar because it does not immediately tell you why or how these characters have gotten to this point. Odysseus’s wife’s name is Penelope, the same as Ulysses Everett McGill’s wife, even though her name is shortened and they call her Penny.
I believe the most important god of diving and power portrayed in the film is a form of Poseidon. The Sheriff from the Jail that is out searching for the men is obsessed with flames. Every time he comes around something is caught on fire. When he awoke the boys by setting the barn that they were sleeping in on fire, the film shows his face. The sheriff was always wearing sunglasses, which mirrored brutally burning flames. Although Poseidon was a god of water the Sherriff related to him just with fire.
This movie was very confusing to me at times. I tried to pay the closest attention to every detail to help connect the stories. I felt that the movie was random scenes all mixed together, minimal scenes were actually in chronological order, most importantly the beginning and end. I thought that I put strong emphasis on certain characters that I thought I would find a deeper meaning for, such as the blind seer pushing the railroad cart and George Nelson the man that constantly robbed banks.
