Of Mice and Men- Curleys Wife Essay Example

A forlorn woman, searching for friendship and attention. Of Mice And Men, by John Steinbeck, is about two men working on a ranch in search of their dreams. Curley’s Wife, the ranch owners’ daughter-in-law, is trying to find someone to give her attention. Curley’s Wife gets characterized through her appearance, dialogues with other characters, and what other characters say about her. Curley’s Wife appearance and actions around the boys show her to be trampy. Lennie and George are in the bunkhouse when Curley’s Wife comes in. She is all made up, has a red cotton house dress on, and red slippers sporting ostrich feathers. Curley’s Wife asks about the were abouts of her husband Curley. George tells her that he is not in here. “Oh . . . she replies. She put her hands behind her back and leaned against the door so that her body was thrown forward.” When Curley’s Wife comes in all made up she is obviously trying to get attention from the boys. After flirting with George an Lennie some more she hears slim outside and tells him that she is looking for Curley. “ Well you ain’t tryin’ very hard. I seen him goin’ in your house.” She suddenly looked apprehensive, “ Bye Boys” ” Thus shows that Curley’s Wife wasn’t really looking for Curley and was just using that for an excuse to go into the bunkhouse. Curley’s Wife is shown to be trampy by many of her actions and her appearances in the book. As we go through the book Curley’s Wife takes on more of a threatening role in the story. When Curley’s Wife leaves the bunkhouse we really see how George feels about her. George says to Lennie “Listen to me, you crazy bastard. Don’t you even take a look at that bitch! I seen em’ poison before, but I’ve never seen no jail bait worse than her!” George obviously thinks that Curley’s Wife is going to cause trouble for Lennie.
