Racism In To Kill A Mockingbird
I. Introduction
A. Do you believe that once race of people is superior to the other?
B. African Americans are victims to more hate crimes
C. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird Haper Lee expresses racism. Three main forms of racism she used in the book are discrimination, prejudices against outsiders, and stereotypes, sadly these forms still happen in our society today.
II. Background/ Narration
A. People exploit minorities for their own personal gain.
B. Racism is a prejudice that takes advantage of the minorities’ innocence.
C. Mayella Ewell does this when she calls Tom Robinson, an innocent black man, in to her home.
III. Argument/ Conformation
C. Racism is based on a lie for personal gain, just like the Ewells used their story against Tom Robinson for personal gain. 1. Tom Robinson, the black field hand accused of rape, is one of the novels “mockingbirds”, an important symbol of innocence destroyed by evil. 2. “The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in the courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right to the jury box. As you grow older you’ll see white men cheat black men everyday of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it- whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash”. –Atticus Finch (pg.223, chap.23)
3. White or black everyone was created equal. No one should ever use anyone for their own advantage.
D. Racism also excludes people just because they are “outsiders”. 1. No one should ever hold prejudices against some one just because they do or say things different. Some people hold prejudices against someone because they are from another city, state, or country. That is exactly what Scout did to her teacher Miss Caroline. \ 2. In To Kill A
