During the Greek-Roman period there was a time span that began with the reign of Augustus Caesar to the death of Marcus Aurelius known as the Pax Romana. This time span, which covered more than 200 years, brought many changes to the Roman Empire. It was a time for unity, peace, and national stability for during the Pax Romana culture as a whole became more sophisticated. Romans not only were fascinated, but eager to figure out the world they were a part of. During this empire the Roman's built roads, improved harbors and cultivated lands they brought fresh water for bathing and drinking which overall enhanced their quality of life. A wide variety of goods were also being transported by their roads and across the Mediterranean, which had been free of pirates making each trip successful. Also during this time Rome had a stable Currency, which also contributed to their well being overall. Another area that also was improved was the conditions of slaves and women, during this empire the freeing of slaves was more common and also the decline in wars also led to the lower numbers of slaves. Women could now own property and make business armaments; women could also draw up a will without their husbands consent. Roman women were also able to come and go as they please without being secluded in their homes. Literature and history also reached its peak during Augustus reign when Rome had experienced Latin literature, which had been brought by Virgil (70-19 B.C) who wrote the Aeneid. The Aeneid was a not only a masterpiece of world literature but a literary epic of national glory. In the poem Virgil wrote about Roman virtues such as patriotism, duty to state, devotion to family and religion. He also gave credit to Rome for trying to bring peace and civilized life to the world and also Honored Augustus who had made this possible.
