ending of the 2nd World War, not just because it is Australian, but because it also conveys a form of…
Promises are unrealistic constraints. They essentially impose restrictive barriers to dedication and commitment because they tend to break easily and only bring obligation and pressure with the effort to keep such promises. The poem, “Promises like Pie Crust” by Christina Rossetti shows this through her negative perspectives toward promises. Such views lead her forsakes relationship. For Rossetti, promises break, lack liberty, and are blind to future.…
Lottery style poker. Poker requires plan. Lottery. No plan. Just scratch. No strategy only rhythm: Scratch card, have hope, lose, lose hope, curse odds, repeat, survive.…
Waniek's "The Century Quilt" not only illustrates the importance that her Meema's quilt had in her life but also represents her family, specifically her grandmother. Through many literary devices such as vivid imagery, symbolism, and structure, the author is able to create not only a reminiscent tone, but also depict how Waniek is hopeful for the future.…
Only owning a hedgehog for a few weeks, I quickly realized that the poor thing got rather dirty. Small pieces of the cage liner and nesting materials easily became lodged between the quills that covered his back. Bathing a hedgehog can't be that difficult. I remembered back to the instructions the pet store clerk told me. Use tear free soap, scrub him with a toothbrush, and use a flannel like fabric to dry him. Determined to make my hedgehog look as pristine as possible I pursued the necessary materials. I quickly found an unused toothbrush and the tear free soap, but the flannel fabric seemed silly. I’m not entirely sure what flannel really was, so I decided to use a regular old towel instead. After inspecting the towels tag,…
Much like poetry, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.” Music and poetry are two platforms in which artists from the beginning of time have chosen to circulate their ideas, feelings, and opinions. Although different in popularity, these mediums are alike in various ways. Nonetheless, not every song you hear on the radio can be properly analyzed using procedures that you would follow to evaluate poetry. A song has to contain certain literary elements essential to poetry, such as the song “From Eden” by Hozier, in order for it to be analyzed. Hozier is recognized for his sentimental lyrics and use of poetic elements to add musicality and rhythm to his music. Through symbolism, repetition, and…
The poem “Beauty” by the author Tony Hoagland is a piece about the true beauty of a woman. Not the outside physical features but what makes a girl a girl and a woman a woman. True inner beauty, the special flower that girls hold so dear. Hoagland uses extended metaphor, third person point of view, and imagery to portray the loss of a woman’s virginity by comparing it to the strive to be beautiful to gain the acceptance of society.…
A tattoo is like poetry, because there is always more to the story than what meets the eye! The sonnet “First Poem for You” by Kim Addonizio is a riveting piece of poetry that uses symbolization to help guide the readers to understand the emotions and feelings the woman has towards her partner. Visual and tactile imagery used within this poem helps readers interpret the meaning of the poem. The theme is longevity and the true meaning of a relationship. In Addonizio “First Poem for You,” Addonizio utilizes literary elements to develop the story and detail a fictional character that is in love with a man that has permanent tattoos. Upon analyzing the symbols, visual imagery and theme throughout this poem the readers will better comprehend the poem to its entirety; these elements symbolize permanence, which is the meaning of the entire poem.…
The poem sets the tone at the second line with “I could feel the devil's handprints around my neck” indicating the tone would be dismal and satanic from the beginning. The theme is how fear can torment someone and feel as if someone is trapped in an inescapable, infinite loop of despair. I picked the tone and theme of this poem because Paul goes through many internal struggles within Tangerine. I personally have somewhat of a connection to the poem, when I was still in elementary school I was hurt by my two older brothers by playing games such as “red dots”. I felt like I would be tortured to no end especially when my parents failed to help me.…
There is a lot to gain from this poem. It teaches people that they can have a great life even though it is rough during their childhood. If he can survive dealing with his parents going through a divorce and then his mom passing away at a young age, then anyone can. It is tough for the boy. But at the end of the poem, he expresses that he is happily riding his bicycle with no worries in life.…
The poem The Century Quilt by Marilyn Nelson Waniek serves as a nostalgic reflection of the history of a cherished quilt, which connects the speaker’s life to her diverse heritage. Wainek’s use of enjambment, personification, and colorful imagery develops a speaker and a character that demonstrates affection for the quilt’s qualities and reveals a more complex underlying message about the quilt’s impact on how the speaker perceives her life and family.…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…
In A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, a working class, African American family struggles to realize the American Dream. The Youngers live in a small, Southside Chicago apartment. When a check for ten thousand dollars arrives, several members of the family assume it will be their ticket to a better life, perhaps even the realization of their dreams. The play takes its title from a line in a poem by Langston Hughes, “A Dream Deferred.” The poem presents various possible outcomes for those who are denied their dreams. Steven Smith argues that lines from the poem describe characters from Hansberry’s play. Steven Smith’s argument is correct. Both Mama, Walter, and Beneatha are sample evidence to the argument.…
In "Pied Beauty" we see a striking dualism in which the nature of beings is rendered in all that is unique, particular and individual. All multiplicity and diversity are the gift of God in the creation of being, emanating from Himself. Gerard Manley Hopkins gives praises to God for the natural beauty of the world, the variety of it and how everything fits together. God symbolizes what is constant and unchangeable. Unlike the things he creates, God never varies. Hopkins' symbols confirm his theme that a wondrous father exist because the worlds if full of beautiful things living in harmony.…
