Polymerization Reactions
Polymerization reaCTIONS polymers are high-molecular-weight compounds, fashioned by the aggregation of many smaller molecules called monomers.
Ex. plastics that have so changed society and the natural and synthetic fibers used in clothing are polymers.
Classification of polymers
Homopolymers - consist of repeated long chains or structures of the same monomer unit.
Ex. PVC(polyvinyl chloride)
Copolymers - polymers that consist of more than one molecule.
Trimers - molecules consisting of 3 monomer units.
Tetramers- 4 monomer-unit compounds polymerization In polymer chemistry, is a process of reacting monomer molecules together in a chemical reaction to form polymer chains or three-dimensional networks.
In IUPAC definition, it is the process of converting a monomer or a mixture of monomers into a polymer. occurs via a variety of reaction mechanisms that vary in complexity due to functional groups present in reacting compounds and their inherent steric effects.
Two basic ways to form polymers
1. linking small molecules together, a type of addition reaction.
2. combining two molecules (of the same or different type) with the elimination of a stable small molecule such as water.
This latter type of polymerization combines addition and elimination reactions and is called a condensation reaction .

Condensation Polymerization
Addition Polymerization Also known as Chain-growth polymerization involves the linking together of molecules incorporating double or triple carbon-carbon bonds.
These unsaturated monomers (the identical molecules that make up the polymers) have extra internal bonds that are able to break and link up with other monomers to form a repeating chain, whose backbone typically contains only carbon atoms.
