Argumentative Definition Essay
Addiction
I know from personal experience, from my dad, that when I was growing up he was definitely addicted to cigarettes. Especially in earlier years, most people didn’t know what an addiction was but nicotine is definitely addictive. Many people can get addicted to a lot of things now a days, there’s even a so called “internet addiction”. There are so many ways people can define addiction as the most common is the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity. In my opinion, I personally do not believe that addiction is a disease but that it is just an obsession with something that makes you feel better as you’re doing it.
The meaning of the word addiction has changed in many ways over the years, although it is still used as the same now in some forms as it was in earlier years. Back in the day, I believe that most people thought addiction could only be used in a harmful way. Such as, some people are addicted to drugs and alcohol, but in my opinion, I believe that you can be addicted to such things that are good for you. Personally, I feel that I’m addicted to working out sometimes, but it is something that is good for my body to be addicted to rather than having an addiction to drugs which would be the exact opposite of an addiction to working out.
The technical definition of the word addiction is a strong and harmful need to do something regularly or have something that could possibly cause withdrawals. I tend to agree with this definition more than any others because I know many people who are or once were addicted to gambling, extremely bad. The addiction of gambling is something that can cause you to have withdrawals from the rush of the gaming but it can be harmful to you financially because casino’s don’t stay open by giving away more money than they take in.
