Many states have been debating within the courts all over the United States. There are two states that have been focused on dealing with gay marriage. The two states that have legalized gay marriage is Massachusetts and California. These two states have set a trademark in history by passing the law of same-sex marriage. Hopefully many others can look pass the sex orientation of others and follow behind the two states.
Massachusetts became the first state in America to legally permit gay marriage on May 17, 2004. The law allowing same-sex marriage was the outcome of a November 2003 ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court that declared the prohibition of gay marriage to be a violation of the state’s constitution (Knox, K., Gay Marriage in Massachusetts, 2004).
The California Supreme Court overturned a ban on gay marriage paving the way for California to become the second state where gays and lesbians residents can marry. The California Supremes stated that domestic partnership or civil union marriages by some other name is or should be good enough. If a state wants to deny the term marriage to gay couples, the court states, then the state has to deny it all couples (Savage, D., California Gay Marriage Ruling, 2008).
The population of gays and lesbians are still fighting for equal rights just like everyone else. It has not been as easy battle, but the gays and lesbians have not given up. People judge them according to what they believe or what they have been taught as a person. If people would just take the time and have an open mind about this
