1. Write out a transcript exemplifying how a therapist should explain confidentiality and its four exceptions. Pretend you are a therapist at the beginning of an initial session outlying informed consent with a client.

2. Contrast open-ended and closed-ended questions during an unstructured clinical interview. Define and provide two advantages of each.
a. Open ended questions: non directive interview style and requires long and elaborate Client responses, it has advantage though because it builds rapport, finds out what the Client believes is important and leads to a quicker interview
i. “Tell me more about…” ii. “How are your symptoms affecting your relationship?”
b. Closed ended questions: a directive interview style and requires short concise answers from the Client, such as multiple choice and “Yes or No”, it has advantages though because the therapist can gather specific information, reduces bias due to clinical judgment and its easier to administer
i. “How many nights do you drink?” ii. “How are your relationships going?”
3. Describe the four additional clinical skills we discussed in class. Define and provide a clinical example of each.
a. Clarification: confirms an accurate understanding of the Clients comments in the form of a question
i. “I want to take a moment to clarify…you said you went to the bar every night this week?”
b. Confrontation: pointing out discrepancies between the Client’s comments
i. Double sided reflection: “Earlier you said XXX and now you said YYY…Help me to understand that”
c. Normalizing: express to the Client that they are experiencing normal distress and that they are not crazy or strange, be careful not to diminish the Client’s psych pain
