I work as an Assessor /Trainer for a medium size training company. As an assessor I have to ensure that I am aware of key generic legislation and stay up to date with legislation relating to my current role. Key legislation fall under the European “6 pack” which includes:-
• Health and Safety at work act 1974
• Control of substances harmful to health (COSHH) Regulations (2002)
• Manual Handling operations regulations (1992)
• (RIDDOR) Reporting of injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (1995)
There are many more legislations that I have to be aware of while teaching. It is important that I keep up to date with these legislations and part of my responsibility is to make sure that they are being adhered to and I know what procedure to follow if this is not the case.
Legislation incorporating human rights include
• Equality act (2010) combining previous legislation on diversity issues.
• Disability discrimination act (DDA) encouraging full inclusion of all learners.
• Freedom of information act (2000)
• Data protection act (1998 amended 2005)
I first came across this legislation from my employment in the military where I had cause to go into the equal opportunities advisor role.
Further legislation that I am aware of is ‘every child matters’ (Children Act 2004) and Safeguarding Vulnerable group’s act 2006. Although I am not currently involved in the teaching of minors I am working with persons that could potentially be classed as vulnerable I.e. females, and ethnic minorities.
Every Child Matters is a set of reforms supported by the Children Act 2004. Its aim is for every child, whatever their background or circumstances, to have the support they need to:
• be healthy
• stay safe
• enjoy and achieve
• make a positive
