This article focuses on how the gasoline engine is unlikely to be replaced by ethanol, hydrogen or electric powered engines anytime soon, contrary to what the media has everyone believing (333). For example, car companies are redesigning the electric car model to be more aerodynamic so the cars can fit smaller batteries in them but are still able to last a whole day’s driving. Refueling electric cars would simply involve plugging it into any electric outlet (334). White indicates pros and cons of alternative powered vehicles to inform the reader that the cons outweigh the pros even though they are possible ideas.…
According to one of the passages of "The Dangerous Delusions Of Energy Independence" Robert Bryce (Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum Brief Edition Behrens and Rosen 201-205) America loves the idea of independence. Their symbol is freedom, so they'd like to be as independent as they possibly can especially with the dangers that are involved with imported oil and gas. In 1974 president Richard Nixon had made a promise to America that they would work their way into being an energy independent country in a matter of 6 years. Every president since Nixon has praised this idea and attempted to accomplish it. Once America can succeeded with this idea, they will become a self sufficient country along with well paid manufacturing jobs that will be created from new energy technologies. Corn and other plants can be turned into billions of barrels of ethanol that will replace oil. With this fundamental process, soldiers will never need to leave the country for foreign oil ever again. Becoming an energy independent country would mean America would have a better thriving economy, a positive balance of trade, and would become a more stronger and better nation.…
It is obvious that the demand for energy and fuel sources is increasing drastically as time goes by. The United States also anticipates an oil demand increase as the population grows over the next few decades (Haug, 2011). Therefore, the big dilemma is whether or not the search for oil on our land should continue. The recent development and expansion of clean energy resources, although expensive, can end the battle over oil deposits and lead the country into a cleaner future.…
For thirty years Americans have watched as our Presidents have debated over the foreign oil dilemma. Throughout those thirty years little has been accomplished. Research has been done and we have finally gotten the hybrid car on the market, but the use of foreign oil is still a drastic measure and keeps rising each year. There are many options America could use to end this war on oil. Some of them include the use of ethanol, hybrid cars, and nuclear power plants. We do use some of these, but perhaps we need to expand their use instead of looking to the Middle East to continue to supply our needs. However, we have not taken the time, nor initiative to research some of these ideas further. For instance, ethanol as a fuel is available in some…
Rodman D. Griffin’s article entitled “Alternative Energy: Can Renewable Energy Sources Replaces Fossil Fuels?” is about alternative methods of getting energy. The article goes into great detail of how America has gone into such an increase in using oil and other non-renewable resources. America spends billions of dollars a year on oil and gas to fuel the countries working class. This was incorporated in my paper along with other facts that Griffin uses throughout his article. His article gave me insight to the crisis that we face everyday and a new wave of thinking when it comes to alternative energy.…
Corn has been extremely helpful in helping our environment by being used in ethanol. Ethanol is used as gasoline and is helping our planet by using renewable resources as fuel instead of fossil fuels. One may not know this but one probably has ethanol in one’s gas tank right now, since it is in 95% of public gas pumps in the US. Ethanol is advancing developments in a more eco-friendly fuel. Ethanol is very helpful and the pros outweigh the cons by so much that is why it is so widely used throughout the US. a pro of ethanol is that since it is natural it is not as harmful to the air as regular gasoline would be. A con is that is destroys one’s engine faster but the earth is more important than an engine. The University of Illinois has been working on developing newer and more efficient ways to use ethanol. Ethanol is by no means brand new to society as the first engine that could run off of ethanol was invented in 1826 by Samuel Morey. In 1908 the first car that could use ethanol as a fuel was the Model T Ford invented by Ford Motor Companies. Ethanol is required by law to be in gasoline because it is part of the Clean Air Act(1990), the Alternative Motor Fuels Act(1988), the Energy policy Act(2005),and the Renewable Fuel Standard Program(RFS). Ethanol is widely used and very beneficial to our environment and society. Ethanol is the term for Corn alcohol and that is why corn is involved with…
The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 mandates that by 2022 36 billion gallons of biofuels will be produced in the United States. 15 billion gallons of this biofuel is expected to come from corn. (1) This will require the sacrifice of enough food to feed 166,000,000 people--over half the current population of the United States. This doesn't even take into consideration that it takes at least 2/3 gallon of fossil fuel, by the US Department of Energy's own figures, to produce one gallon of ethanol. (2) (Ethanol producers do not use ethanol to produce ethanol because it is too expensive.)…
In the chapter I learned that ethanol is not as renewable as it seems. It is an alternative to biofuel, and corn can be grown and grown again, but what about all the fossil fuels that are used to produce the ethanol? The only way it could be used as an alternative to nonrenewable resources is if we find a way to produce it without using fossil fuels. In addition it is not as efficient. We would have to use twenty five percent more ethanol to be equal the amount of energy gasoline produces costing the consuming to buy more, and spend more money. I also don’t believe it will make us less dependent on imports from foreign countries. In chapter 2, it notes that we only get three percent of our gasoline usage from the Persian Gulf. Three percent of our gasoline usage would be equivalent to fifty percent of our total farmland. Where would we farm the other ninety-seven percent of our gasoline usage that we get from Mexico and Canada? We would have to import it from Brazil making us dependent on them for our ethanol!…
Years ago farmers were encouraged to grow more and were given government grants to do so. “Most of this comes from the Bush administration wanting to have ethanol to replace twelve percent of oil consumption by 2014” (Collapse movie). This would take all of the arable land and therefore this did not work for the simple fact that net energy would not allow it to be a viable fuel source. So now if one where to go to Iowa or Nebraska all they would see for miles and miles are would fields of corn. In 1979 a comity was formed to see just how efficient ethanol really was David Pimentel, professor emeritus of entomology at Cornell University concluded from this study that it would take more energy to produce ethanol than one could get out of it.”Department of Energy invited Pimentel to chair an advisory committee to look at ethanol as a gasoline…
Do you know what is going to claim the increase in world consumption this year? Cars, not people. The grain required to fill a 25-gallon SUV gas tank with ethanol will feed one person for a year. The grain needed to fill that same tank every two weeks over a year will feed up to 26 people! Yes, there are places where we help satisfy hunger, but this food runs out! Not everyone gets to eat, and you are trying to take what little food we have for them and convert it into fuel! You must understand the consequences that this decision can bring.…
As Americans, we are dependent on our cars to get us from point A to point B. Before gas prices hit four dollars a gallon, no one was concerned where the oil came from as long as it was there and we had an unlimited supply available. Today, the demand for oil is so high that domestic production cannot keep up. Now we are forced to seek oil from foreign countries. The problem now is that the economy, being as it is, has forced the price per barrel to go up, in turn making the price of gas go up. With the dramatic rise in gas prices, the American people have started to change habits in order to save a penny here and there. Even businesses have to make adjustment in order to keep a workforce. Will the high price of gas change the American way of life?…
Should the United States enter into military intervention in foreign countries for humanitarian reason? Why? Why not? Under what conditions should the U.S. intervene if at all?…
The idea of naturalism stating the environment changes people is true. Naturalism is the surrounding of one’s life changing due to certain shifts in their life. Although people might argue and say naturalism is not about the environment but actions and activity one has, naturalism is not based on things as they appear but revolves around the deterministic view on a character’s life. This essay will step into three different points of naturalism and break down the understanding and comprehension of naturalism. Naturalism and the environment changes people because they affect our brain, shape who we are, and determine the life of many others.…
I feel we should find other ways to get our fuel like ethanol. We can make our own fuel and even if it cost more we no longer have to fight for our fuel. We can make our ethanol from corn husk and not the actual kernel so it would not interfere with the increase of food prices. To many people ethanol is the choice and I agree.…
We only have two years of oil supply left. Once we run out of oil, we will only go downhill from there, so we have to act now and fast. The United States have disappointed us as a country in several ways. They have established the Immigration Quota Act, which has restricted our immigration to the United States. They have also frozen our assets and bank accounts. Now, we are not able to use our money. This incident has delayed us in our finances. The United States have also enforced an oil embargo on us. The United States is getting stronger every day, especially with the expansion of their naval fleet and military. We need to take action and stop them now! We can accomplish this by bombing Pearl Harbor!…
