In my opinion, I think this poem consists of more than one direct meaning, which is God being dead, and justice being gone. This poem reveals the sins committed on earth by human beings are bad, and how things would change when more people become corrupt and take advantage over one another. As a narrative poem, this poem describes how Satan will dominate the world when the end of the world arrives. The enjambment in the poem is used to convey that the end of the world is going to come not as a gradual event, but as one huge connected climax. This poem literally gives out a warning sign, and reveals what a horrific ending we would have if people decide to be selfish, greedy, and act inhumanely. The poem I chose to share at the poetry café is called, “God Lay Dead In Heaven” by Stephen Crane. Stephen Crane is an American novelist, short story writer, poet, and journalist. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. Crane began writing at the age of four and had published several articles by the age of 16. Stephen Crane was born on November 1, 1971, and died on June 5, 1900; he had passed away at a very young age after accomplishing great works in literature. Having little interest in university studies, he left school in 1891 to work as a reporter and writer. When Crane began to write poetry seriously, he once stated that his overall poetic aim was "to give my ideas of life as a whole, so far as I know it". The poetic style used in both of his books of poetry, The Black Riders and Other Lines and War is Kind, was unconventional for the time in that it was written in free verse without rhyme, meter, or even titles for individual works. However the poem I have chosen was written by the proficient poet, in 1895.
I chose this poem because the title captured my attention. Usually, there are great things or words said with anything God related, yet this poem started off ironically. The title seemed interesting as it stated “God lay dead in heaven”, and so when I read the poem, I knew it had a deeper meaning and to it, therefore I decided to share this with the class and elaborate on it myself. Also the poem had difficult lines to understand at first, but later once I had read them over and over again I started to notice it was a dark moody poem. I also did some research on the poem and got a better idea. I think this poem would be good to talk about, in regards to sharing how corrupt the world could become and also for the purpose of sharing a wondrous, meaningful poem. I admire how this poem contains only eighteen lines, organized in one stanza, yet withholds a large amount of meaning to it.

This poem is narrative, and consists of no rhyme or meter. This poem is part of "The Black Riders and Other Lines" which is a book of poems. This poem only contains one stanza with eighteen lines and it is a free verse. In this narrative poem, Stephen Crane's organization, tone, and language are used to portray his theme. The poem is structured where the events are unfolding and there are emotions conflicted with it too. The person feels no hope as the events continue, and the person is ready to give up. It is a series of events and mixed emotions happening all at once, and it is not put together in a certain way.
