The popular outlook of the American Civil War is that the Confederacy was defeated by the Union Army with the combined leadership of Lincoln, Grant, and Sherman. They lost because of the Union’s overwhelming manpower and economic advantages. However, there is more to it than just that. In the book Confederate Reckoning, author Stephanie McCurry states that the Confederate States of America did themselves in due to structural issues within their society. The book presents a “political history of the unfranchised” referring to Southern slaves and wartime women. Ironically, the most underrepresented groups would be one of the downfalls of the Confederacy. Slaves and women became unexpected consequences for the Confederacy as the government was forced to…

Leonardo DaVinci’s Mona Lisa is one of the most well-known paintings in the world. Show anyone from a 60 year old man to a 10 year old girl a picture of the painting and, most likely, they will be able to name the painting as well as the painter. While some say that DaVinci’s painting is the most famous of all created, many of Andy Warhol’s paintings are also easily recognizable. Almost everyone has seen the Campbell’s Soup Can series Warhol painted or his famous Triple Elvis print. This paper will be focusing on his Marilyn Monroe series, which I will be comparing and contrasting to the Mona Lisa. There are many obvious differences between the two paintings, such as the time period, color scheme, background and subject matter. My goal is to also point out some similarities such as their use of line, recreations, fame, and prominence in society.…

Nearly half (47%) of all illegal border crossings into the U.S. occur along the Arizona border with Mexico. As the state with the most illegal crossings t the United States/Mexico border, its remote and dangerous deserts are the entry point for thousands of Mexicans and Central Americans(Cooper). The non-native citizen population has grown rapidly in this area. Arizona had an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants in April 2010, a figure that had increased fivefold since 1990.(Cooper). Illegal immigration, like most other issues has an upside and a downside. On the upside, there is a steady workforce for the labor industry (agriculture, construction, etc.), and the service industry (restaurants). The agricultural industry in Arizona is comprised of 59% immigrants, the construction industry is made up of 27% workers not native to the United States, and the service industry is populated by 22% foreign born employees. On the downside, illegal immigration brings its share of problems including crime, poverty, uncirculated funds (pay not reintroduced into the economy in which it was originated), and an overburden on social services. It is the latter that sparked the now controversial Senate Bill 1070 that effectively closes the border to all but the few lucky enough to obtain legal status.…

The impact Japan has had on the modern world is enormous. It occupies less than one three hundredth of the planet’s land area, yet wields one sixth of the planet’s economic might. There would be few homes and offices that do not rely on at least some Japanese technology. Japanese cars rule the roads. Despite recent problems with so called ‘Japanese style management’, many western and Asian managers still try to do things ‘the Japanese way’. Japanese foreign aid props up many a developing country’s economy. Project developers around the world seek Japanese investment. Tourist operators target the large numbers of wealthy Japanese who now travel overseas. Japan itself features as one of the most popular of all ‘places I would like to visit’ in western surveys. The list goes on.…

AbstractWith all the latest technologies and techniques being implemented, Cell phones are no more used for just calling or messaging. They are at a stage where they can be used for doing almost anything and everything. The leading cell phones in today’s tech-race are the Android phones and the iPhones of Apple. These two are leading the market when it comes to phones with latest and leading technology. iPhone applications are developed in Objective C language while Android applications are developed in Java. Due to the current restrictions and differences between iPhone and Android platforms, applications that need to be deployed on both the platforms need to be developed twice. This involves double effort and time. Hence, there is a rise in demand, for Java to Objective C translator. This translator will allow an application to be developed only once but deploying it on both the platforms, i.e. iPhone and Android. Whenever any new application is to be developed, its application code along with the translation details are sent to the translator. If the application to be developed is for an iPhone, then the translator will refer to the Objective C library and generate a respective Objective C code for that application. If it is to be developed for an Android phone, then the translator will refer to the java library and generate java code for that same application. The generated code will then be sent to be implemented on the required platform. This would help in reducing the development time and energy.…
