Rock Music's Influence on Society Essay Example
Rock Music's Influence On Society

Music has been around for thousands of years, it appeals to everyone. When was the last time you have heard someone say, "I hate all music."? Lately though music has been criticized for corrupting teen's minds.

Metal is being blamed for giving teens only dark images and thoughts in their minds. Although the media and public criticize metal and rock music and blame the music for influencing teens negatively, they actually give many teenagers an outlet from their life problems.

Today's Rock music is a lot different then it was 40 years ago. The topics they sing about are different as well as the sound of the music and, lyrics. People thought that listening to rock gave you an attitude of rebellion.

Even when the lyrics weren't in any way obscene people had that negative attitude toward the music and today people still have that some attitude about rock. Only now, that rock has changed a vast amount a person's attitude toward rock has probably gotten worse.

Bands that sing about death, sadness and, depression have been blamed for being the reason someone commits suicide or murders another person. These bands are considered talentless by most people .

Then you have the bands that use obscene language, bands that people say may have taken it too far and may have used a lot of unnecessary words in their songs.

Some people might say that obscene lyrics are straightforwardly obscene, and anyone with good morals will know enough to avoid them, or at least not repeat them to his or her parents. Other people might not care and say that a song is for entertainment, and that obscene lyrics are just a part of getting a bands message across .

People say that rock and metal bands like KoRn and iron maiden give kids negative thoughts and make teens act out in violence. This however is not true. The only way rock influences teenagers is on what they wear, that does not mean that the kids will be violent.

Lots of music artists use figurative language in their music. An example of this was used during the hearings when Dee Snider, lead singer of heavy metal band, Twisted Sister defended his music against the allegations that Tipper Gore had claimed. She claimed that the song “Under The Blade” was about sadomasochism, when in fact, according to Dee Snider’s testimony, the song was about guitarist Eddie Ojeda’s fear of going under during surgery. But it wasn’t just heavy metal music that was the concern of the PMRC. The PMRC released the filthy fifteen, which is a list of fifteen songs that the PMRC deemed inappropriate to be sold in stores.…

Originated in the early 1950’s, rock ‘n’ roll was known to be the world’s most popular and multicultural form of music. Therefore, Rock being a mixture of all the American music that came before it, then dominated the music industry but also extremely influenced everything from politics to social norms. This suggests music had moved away from its roots in Blues and country music and grew into something bigger known simply as rock. Rock ‘n’ roll lost much of the rebelliousness that had initially given it its power but then spread popularity internationally since it became increasingly accepted over time. For example, white musical traditions became integrated with black performers, ultimately encouraging the desegregation movement itself. The…

As the 40’s came to an end, and the US finished with World War II, Americans had the time and energy to put their focus in other areas, such as music, poetry, film, and fashion. The biggest influence on the expansion of these arts is the television. With more and more americans being able to afford televisions, it became much easier to spread ideals and movements. Rock and Roll came roaring into young American’s lives, with icons with attractive, familiar faces like Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and Little Richard. Rock and Roll epitomized the feelings of rebellion and independency of the new generation. The older generation saw that Rock and Roll was a sinister release for the younger generations, and that the “idols” were a bad influence on…

The inference that heavy metal causes teen suicide is as implausible as are the conservatives interpretations of heavy metal, explains sociology professor and author of Heavy Metal Under Attack: Suicide and Aggression, Deena Weinstien. As Weinstien explains throughout her article, heavy metal music has been pursued by many groups and individuals to be a leading cause of teen suicide. Groups such as PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) would work against many popular heavy metal artists and record companies in lawsuits regarding the musics role and active involvement in teen suicide. According to PMRC, the lyrical content of certain metal songs touched-base with themes of santanism and suicide, and imposed them upon the listeners. However, contrary to the groups belief, throughout future lawsuits and court decisions, the belief that artists are intentionally manipulating listeners throughout lyrical content was found to be more often a misinterpretation of the songs meaning.…

The type of music that later became known as "rock and roll" evolved in the mid 1950's. It was a combination of jazz, rhythm and blues, country, and gospel sounds. One of the reasons rock and roll was said to have such a great impact on society at the time was mainly due to the fact that it broke the "race barriers" of the time. During the 1950's, the greater part of the United States, in particular the South, was segregated, with blacks on one side and whites on the other. However, rock musicians were both black and white, and listeners really didn't seem to care what color the performer was.…

As I said above, music certainly has so many positive impacts and power. The sound, messages, activities and artists’ attire directly impact on listeners and society in powerful ways. Sometimes, it could be negative also. Some lyrics have become explicit to drugs, sex and violence. It has significant impacts on behavior, mood and lifestyle too. Some rap music has sexual and abusive language as well as message of violence and racism. Drug, tobacco and alcohol use also tend to be glorified in these songs. Some studies have shown that there is a correlation between bad behavior and negative music contents. In some song album, alcoholic theme has been showing with drugs, which have profoundly impact on youth’s lifestyle and people blindly follow these artists that can lead to some detrimental effects on their lives, health and behavior. Rap music videos can illustrate glamorous and dangerous fantasies of wealth and sex appeal. The people who listen violent and aggressive music, tend to be more violent in their life. The most famous instance in which music has been blamed for violent acts was the Columbine shootings, in Littleton, Colorado in which 12 were killed and 24 were injured. In addition, more car accidents have been noted due to aggressive and fast pace music played in cars. Rock and roll has developed a long way throughout the years from a dance craze in the 1950's to a political and cultural landscape that is recognized worldwide. Rock and roll has come to define the roots of teenage rebellion, people who don't follow the norms, and have disrespect for authority. The style of rock and roll itself is a melting pot of music, a combination of sounds that include jazz, country, blues, ragtime, gospel, swing, classical, and ethnic music. It can be a simple variation of three chords to a complex chromatic scale combination. It can convey emotions such as love, hate, fear, lust, sadness, joy, disillusion, or a strong sense of reality. Many things can be said about rock but the fact is that it is the most widely diverse of all music genres.…

The types of metal I listen to are; Thrash metal, Death metal, Nu metal, Melodic metal, Rap metal, Alternative metal, and sometimes Christian metal. All of the other types are way too dark and devilish for my tastes. I draw the line at slipknot. That is the darkest I go. If you have listened to them before you probably think, how much darker can you go? Trust me it can get a lot darker. I'm not going to get into details on how much darker you can go, because i'll probably get kicked out of school. The one thing that irritates me the most is, not all metal is dark and brutal. Not all bands worship satan. I know crazy right? Killswitch-engaged and Bullet for my valentine are bands that write about life and emotions. Not pentagrams or sacrifices to the devil. The music they write is like poetry. Sometimes about love, other times about sadness. Just like any other music out there. The reason why I like metal is because I grew up on the classic metal bands. Like Metallica and Megadeth. My dad was and is a huge Metallica fan. So when you grow up around that it stays with you forever. In middle I started to expand my music. I found the nu metal and melodic metal groups. Metal that my generation listens to. Middle school was rough for me. Metal helped me get through alive. It expanded my mind and gave me some hope. Not all metal is bad. Another thing, if you can't understand what they are saying, you must be deaf. I can understand them perfectly fine. I am not going to name my favorite bands because there are too many to…
