Contrast Between Language of Love in the Balcony Scene and the Language of Death in the Final Scene of Romeo and Juliet

In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare introduces many themes that he continues throughout all of his tragedies, including the language of love vs. the language of death. The balcony scene is the most valuable scene illustrating the language of love, whereas in the final scene of the play the language of death is used to set the stage for their suicides, pulling together the tragic ending of the play.

Throughout the second scene of Act II, Romeo uses beautiful metaphors and similes to express his affection for Juliet:

O, speak again bright angel, for thou art
As glorious to this night, being o'er my head
As is a winged messenger of heaven.(Rom. II. II, 28-30.)

This passage is used to compare Juliet to an angel, somethign that is universally held as sacred and lovely. Elsewhere in the scene there are lines that describe their love for one another, and add to the romantic theme of the scene:

And but thou love me, let them find me here.
My life better ended by their hate
The death prorogued, wanting of thy love.(Rom. II. II, 76-78.)

In the final scene of the play, there is much talk of death by Romeo, Friar Laurence, and Juliet. Romeo announces his own demise in his soliloquy:

Depart again. Here, here I will remain
With worms and chambermaids. O, here
Will I set my everlasting rest
And shake the yoke of inauspicious stars
From this world-wearied flesh. Eyes, look your last!
Arms, take your last embrace! And, lips,
O you
The doors of breath to engrossing death!(Rom. V. III, 108-114.)

The Friar's Frantic wrods and actions in conflict to his previous calm stature illustrate the grim mood of the scene: Stay not to question, for the watch is coming.

Come, go good Juliet. I dare no longer stay.(Rom. V. III, 158-9.)

For instance, when Montague is describing how his son Romeo is acting due to Romeo’s unreturned love for Rosaline he states, “As is the bud bit with an envious worm, Ere he can spread his sweet leaves to the air, Or dedicate his beauty to the same.” He is suggesting that Romeo is like a flower “bud” that won’t open itself up to the world because it’s been poisoned from within by parasites.     Shakespeare presents Romeo and Juliet’s love with a matter of urgency and desperation due to the constant interruptions and the use of dramatic irony. Juliet's promise to Romeo to "follow thee my lord throughout the world" is full of dramatic irony and foreshadows the final scene of the play, when their star crossed love forces them to kill themselves. The simple phrase “my lord” would then have been viewed as blasphemous and a very disrespectful thing to say. This therefore exaggerates the passion in Romeo and Juliet’s love as well as their willingness to risk everything to be together. Constant Interruptions from Juliet’s Nurse adds to the atmosphere of intense urgency and determination as the lovers frantically and unwillingly part. This shows how infatuated they are and this passion and anticipation adds builds the tension throughout the rest of the play as Shakespeare’s use of dramatic irony from the prologue (“A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life”) presents the characters as naïve and unknowing to the audience. This is further exaggerated in the film as the prologue is shown in a very focused and dramatic way forcing in the message that in the end both Romeo and Juliet will be dead. Juliet also questions “What’s in a name?” showing her confusion and re-enforcing that she loves Romeo for being Romeo. This presents her as a very gloomy character as she tends to look on the pessimistic side of their relationship. Juliet focuses on their trouble in being together rather than focusing on the time they have whereas Romeo embraces the little time they have together. This time together though is only spent in privacy, where their love flourishes, rather than in public because of the social barrier put up by the conflict between the two families.…
