Preschool 3-5 Year Olds
Purpose
Learn how to prevent unintentional injury, learn to express and understand the emotions that may go along with injury and/or dangerous situations, learn to understand the difference between safe and unsafe, learn to follow simple directions and allow children to enhance social development through group activities and play.
Objectives
The children will recognize the importance of individuals outside the family who care for others and aid in preventing illness and injury. The children will also identify hot things in their environment that can cause injury and the importance of not touching them.
Activities
Children will have the opportunity to choose two different items from the table and put them in the column (hot or not hot) that they think the items would belong in. For example, if a child chose an apple and a lighter we would hope they would stick the apple under the "not hot" and the lighter under the "hot" column. Once every child has placed their items on the board the class can discuss why they put each picture where. At this time the children could ask questions about the activity itself or anything pertaining to fire and fire safety.
Children will then have free play and teachers will encourage discussions with the children during their dramatic play on what they are doing and how they are using the safety skills they just learned about.
Procedure
To prepare the children for this activity the teacher must discuss the difference between hot and not hot items and explain the safety measures we must take when we are around things that may be hot and why. The teacher will also use this time to tie in the importance of fire safety and how fire fighters help people and we should not be scared of them. Before the activity begins, the teacher must set out all of the felt pieces onto a table in no specific order.
Discussion Points
The teacher will be in charge of explaining the activity to
