As a quick statement prior to beginning this assignment I thoroughly enjoyed researching this topic. It has been of personal interest to me for years. I have, in the past (as far back as the 1970 's), invested my personal time researching designs and building prototypes, which utilize alternative fuels for vehicle propulsion and various mechanical motion applications with a practical approach.…

This activity helped the children understand that temperature can affect the state of a substance as it showed that the water was liquid in room temperature but turned to solid ice in the colder temperature of the freezer which is important when following the national curriculum for science as it states that children should be taught to 'compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases and to observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C)'. I know that this worked because during the activity I asked the children around the room what the temperature needs to be like to melt the ice to water and water to ice, I asked which was the liquid and which was the solid and I what would happen to the water when we put it in the freezer.…

Sodium Chloride(NaCL), the salt that is applied to roads, is the most common practice to reduce ice on roads in Minnesota and around snowy parts of the United States. Salt has been the most effective means of deicing roads because it lowers the freezing point of water, there for melting the snow, and it is the one of the cheapest products to use. According to a study done by Marquette University in 1992, accident rates are eight times higher when salt is not applied to icy, snowy roads. Salt is proven an effective reducer of accidents (Kuemmel). What people commonly are not aware of is that salt is generally effective until 15 degrees farenheit. After that point, the salts ability to break the bond between the ice and the road rapidily decreases until, at about 5f, salt is no longer a method to melt ice.…

When watching the last video, “Chasing Ice,” I got to see more of an explore side of ice. With watching “America’s Ice Age” I get to see more of the scientific side of things. How scientist can look at ice with mysterious marks and see evidence of past floods, or how they can look at mysterious markings in rocks and see the movement and direction of a past iceberg is incredible. It makes you think what every day ordinary people like myself, overlook. I will say since I have started this class I look at the trees, the sky, and landscape of my own community differently. I constantly find myself thinking of the unbelievable way our world was formed. I might not completely and fully understand it all yet, but it is…
