The predominant notion of the article “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such a Bad Idea” by Melissa Healy from the Los Angeles Times dated May 18, 2010, is that social media isn’t as harmful as a majority of parents make it out to be. They believe that social media hampers teenagers’ social skills. However, the psychologically healthiest kids are those who spends a lot of time on social media.…

In order to identify the adverse effects that according to researchers, online social networking sites have, I have compiled some specific questions that will be addressed in the research that I will conduct and will guide me to reach to a solid conclusion. These questions include, (1) what is the relationship that teenagers have created with the social networking sites? (2) What is the impact of social networking sites on the social life of human beings? (3) The extent to which social networking sites can be dangerous or harmful. These questions are supposed to be examined in the research paper in order to derive a meaning to it and to evaluate the importance the topic has. However, the research has been conducted in the passage of two weeks and the bibliography is comprised of at least six references that completely belong to journal articles.…
In one study focusing on the impact of social media on young adults, Virden, Trujillo, and Predeger (2014) recruited young females college students to share their perceptions of the risky behaviors connected with social media. Their findings clearly state that the participants acknowledge the existence of risks and unfavorable consequences behind social media usage, going from the current detachment between young people and the world around them resulting from its massively and uncontrollable use (Virden, A. L., Trujillo, A., & Predeger, E. 2014). Participants on this study described that online communications have such a strong effect that people feel discomfort when they have face-to-face conversations. Also, kids are growing up with a…
In the same way, research show that children, who constant use social network, were exposed to aggresive interaction between each other(American Psychological Association,2012). Regardless of whether one participates or not, there is no denying the significant impact that online social networking sites, such us MySpace and Facebook, are having on America’s younger generations. These trends are duly noted in Alice Mathias’s New York Times feature, “The Fakebook Generation” and Dana Fleming’s New England Journal of Higher Education article, “Youthful Indescretions: Should Colleges Protect Social Network Users from Themselves and Others?” Though both writers agree on the significance of these types of sites, their views differ greatly as to the impact the sites are having on America’s youth.…

This destructive piece of communication in disguise haunts teenagers in school and out of school. We struggle to stay true to ourselves and our morals. Social media can also be a great addition to stress that only troubles us teenagers and leaves us in the dark, hoping for a way out. In our world, social media’s negativity can cause depression, a lack of an ability to express ourselves, and confusion about who we truly are. It clouds our thoughts and encourages inappropriate behavior through advertisement. Teenagers are constantly struggling to manage the demands of school and social media, and as a result, the chance of success in school decreases noticeably. Social media is a distraction to our future and maintaining our identities. It is easy to get caught in the concealed webs of social media, neglect it and eventually, regret our choices. Without acknowledging the dark effects of social media on our lives, no teenager will ever escape its webs and will continue to be isolated in the dark—in the dark…
Online social media have gained astounding worldwide growth and popularity which has led to attracting attention from a variety of researchers globally. Social media effects millions of people worldwide daily and many teens spend at least a hour a day on social networking sites, today we will decide whether or not social media is a hindrance or a tool for teens and adults. Although with time all generations have come to accept the new technologies and offspring that it has, one of the offspring from technology in the 21st century is social media. Social networking has brought about, teenagers and young adults are the most fanatic users of these sites. According to various research studies in the field of online social networks, it has been revealed that these sites are impacting the lives of the youth greatly. When using these sites such as Twitter, Facebook or MySpace, there are both positive and negative effects on the youth and today we are going to contrast the two sides to see if the negative effects outweigh the positive effects. Some of the points that will be argued are that many people believe the use of social media helps with communicating but is not allowing us to make connections with the people we are interacting with. One of the most negative effects of social media is the reoccurring cases of cyber bullying; almost all teens that have social media accounts have seen or been involved in cyber bullying. Lastly we will discuss many positive effects of social media and how it can help keep people connected from all over the world.…
Social networking is all the rage with society. It is a main outlet for both personal and professional networking. Whether its job related and trying to put the word out for prospective employers or just connecting with a long distance friend via instant message, there aren’t too many people who have not taken advantage of this option to connect with others. There are not many households without the technology to take advantage of this option in communication. It seems to be the main form of contact within society today. The problem with this method of communication is that it does not allow for strong face to face interaction and allows society to in a sense to hide themselves. This inherently has led to a society with lower self esteem and has put a wall up with its users lowering standards of social interaction. It has had such a negative impact and should be used with greater caution especially within the teenage and young adult generation. Such sites as Facebook, Myspace and orkut have had an extremely negative impact on society and what should be perceived as acceptable. Social Networks and the ideas and activities associated with these networks have become profoundly detrimental to society today. It has escalated into much more impressive problems such as cyber bullying, intense obsession and lessened interpersonal communication skills.…
It has been studied that social networks has a huge effect on teenagers (niemer 120). While a majority of teens claim that social networks are "mostly kind," 88 percent have said they've witnessed cruel behavior on these sites, according to a new Pew report. Teen are commonly introduced to social networks to do things they wouldn’t normally do. I remember girls in my grade getting on websites to produce explicit pictures of them to find “a man” who are usually over age. Some teens try to tamper with other peoples respect, but lower their own in the process. The media didn’t encourage this but they don’t stop it either.…
In this article, the author examines the truth behind the controversies based around teens and their participation in social networking. She focuses on scientific studies rather than casual theories and methodologies. The article “reviews relevant research that informs several controversies concerning social networking sites and adolescents” (June, 1435). It appears that social networking has a negative impact on adolescents, allowing things like cyberbullying to take place when it never existed as a problem in the past.…
To speak on social networking and media, one must define it. The definition of social media is “the relationships that exist between network of people”. Technically speaking, Socialmedia.biz states, "Social Media are those forms of publishing that are based on a dynamic interaction, a conversation, between the author and active readers, in contrast with traditional broadcast media where the ‘audience’ is a passive ‘consumer’ of ‘content’”. This presents the fact that the audience is not necessarily specified, and the viewers are unintentional. Children and teenagers have became a large audience of social media. As technology has developed, teenagers have the internet at their fingertips. Social networking has given teenagers the advantages of learning, socializing and endless entertainment. Amanda Lenhart stated, “95% of all teens ages 12-17 are now online and 80% of those online teens are users of social media sites”. According to a study conducted by the National Institute on Media and Family, children spend more time sitting in front of electronic screens than doing any other activity besides sleeping. Kids’ excessive screen time comes with all kinds of hazards: like lack of physical activity, exposure to adult themes and content, and lack of interaction with family and peers. And then there are the ads—for almost every product imaginable, including alcohol and medications intended for adult use only. Ads also send strong messages about personal appearance and other topics to which children and teens are especially aware of. As years go by social networks keep growing, and prove to have many negative and positive influences on teenagers. And Social networking is not just Facebook and twitter, social media is any web based platform that enables people to interact. With the risks involved, the question is asked, should teenagers be limited in their use of social media?…
What was once thought as advantageous to our society, is now wreaking havoc on the innocent minds of young adolescents. Created in 1997, social media was envisioned as a tool that would help others communicate with those who live far away. Social media was a tool that was supposed to increase communication and allow for more socialness in the society, however its plan was flawed. The first symptoms of social media started to rise in the early 2000’s, when the internet became a common tool for anonymous users to say what they please without thinking of the consequences to the other anonymous users on the internet. With the rise of animosity came the rise of cyberbullying, a new easier way for malefactors to put down others. Along with social…
Many teenagers love social media because of its wide connectivity and function that people can receive it for free; it does not require money to make an account and use it. Facebook is the most visible among various social media. What’s impressive about this site is that you can easily connect with your long lost friends and see how they’re doing, or vice versa. You can also make new friends in Facebook. Though this could get addictive and may divert our attention away from the real world. Like what Cornell University’s Steven Strogatz said; “Social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media.” I strongly agree with this statement. Also, people become a whole new person, because it’s the Internet. People can be anything or anyone in the Internet.…
