specific latent heat Essay Example
search- specific latent heat
Q. Value for the specific latent heat of fusion of water:
Specific latent heat is where the amount of energy (in joules) needed to change the state of 1Kg of a substance is called its specific latent of heat.
You can calculate the amount of energy needed using the equation: energy (J) = specific latent heat (J/Kg) X mass (Kg)
Material Specific heat of fusion (J/Kg) Specific latent heat of vaporisation (J/Kg)
Water 334000 2260000
Lead 24500 871000
Ethanol 108000 855000 (OCR gateway GCSE science- page 170)
2. RESEARCH -Specific heat capacity:
The amount of energy in joules, needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of material by 1c.
Material Specific heat capacity (J/KgC)
Water 4200
Calculating the amount of heat transferred:
Energy (J) = mass (Kg) X specific heat capacity (J/KgC) X temperature change (C)
(OCR gateway GCSE science- page 169)
3. Why energy is needed to melt ice and how this is explained by the structures of ice and water?

At point of A, energy has been added to the water and the temperature of the water is rising because the of the increase in energy.
At point B the energy has moved on from raising the temperature to braking down the intermolecular bonds of the ice. The temperature has stopped rising while the bonds are being broken.
At point C all the bonds had been broken down and the energy had gone into rising the temperature again until it reaches 100C.
At point D the water had risen to 100C and now the energy has gone into breaking the bone to cause evaporation. When the bonds have been all broken the energy goes back into rising the temperature, and that is what E is. http://www.physchem.co.za/Heat/Latent.htm or http://www.kentchemistry.com/links/Energy/HeatFusion.htm
Q- Why ice is more effective for cooling a drink than cold water?
The cooling of a drink with a cube of ice is more effective than using cold water because of the energy extracted from the drink to melt

Using the temperature change we can calculate how much thermal energy was transferred into the water. The change in temperature was a difference of 14’C, from 26’C to 40’C. Therefore to rise 1mL of water by 14’C you need 58.16J.…

The difference between the final and initial temperatures is negative. This is due to the fact that gas, or liquid, always flows from the region of its higher concentration to the region of its lower concentration. Since the surrounding temperature, at the time of experiment, was 〖17〗^o C which is lesser than 〖23〗^o C, the heat escaped into the surrounding.…

In this experiment, a device that measures heat, a calorimeter, will be used. For this experiment, a calorimeter will be made with two nested Styrofoam cups, cardboard to cover the top as a lid, a thermometer, as well as about 25mL of water and about 7g of NH4¬NO3. The temperature of the solution will be closely monitored with the thermometer.…

    Steps To Call 9-1

There are four steps in caring for a heart attack. The first step is to immediately call 9-1-1, if a heart attack is suspected or if the victim's chest pain does not so away in a victim taking nitroglycerin. However, medications to dissolve a clot must be given early. Also, do not drive yourself or anyone else to the hospital. The second step is to monitor the victims breathing. If he/she becomes unresponsive and stops breathing begin CPR. The third step is to help the victim to get in the most comfortable resting position, usually sitting. Then loosen the clothing around the neck and waist. Also, be calm and reassuring. The fourth step is, if the victim is alert, and able to swallow and not allergic to aspirin, then help the victim take one adult aspirin (325mg) or two chew-able children's aspirins (81mg each). Also, pulverize or have the victim crunch them with his/her teeth before swallowing. Then find out if the victim is using nitroglycerin. Nitroglycerin tablets,…

First you will fill a 250 mL beaker with water then put it on the hot plate. Second you will mass and record the mass of a metal sample. Make sure you also record the metal's number. Gently place the metal sample in the beaker using tongs. While waiting, set your calorimeter. Put the calorimeter on the balance, zero it out, and fill it with 5/8 full of water. Record exact amount. Start a new experiment of the data collection system, and the temp of the water in the calorimeter as the water's initial temp. After the water has boiled for a while, use tongs to remove and quickly place it in the calorimeter. Put lid back on. Swirl the calorimeter and observe the temp every 15 secs until it drops. Record the max. temp as your final temp for both the water and metal. If you have time, do it over again!…

Abstract: The purpose of this experiment is to study the energy changes associated with the phase changes of water. In this experiment we know the water is gaining energy so we know the heat is going to be positive and we can use the equation MCΔT to find the energy change. The specific heat will be 1 and we just have to measure the water to find the mass and take the temperature before and after we start to find the energy change.…
