Strategic thinker
After reading through, the tactical planner and logistician. I would consider myself to be a strategic thinker. Strategy has never been more challenging, or more important, than in today's environment of global competition, in which, corporate strategies must transcend the borders of nations and markets. Too many organizations try to be everything to everyone, wasting resources in markets that may never provide a worthwhile return on investment.
What is strategic thinker?
The ability to come up with effective plans in line with an organization's objectives within a particular economic situation. Strategic thinking helps business managers review policy issues, perform long term planning, set goals and determine priorities, and identify potential risks and opportunities. Systems perspective; being able to understand implications of strategic actions. "A strategic thinker always have a mental model of the complete end-to-end system of value creation, his or her role within it, and an understanding of the competencies it contains.
Intent focused; more determined and less distractible than rivals in the marketplace. Crediting Hamel and Prahalad with popularizing the concept, Liedtka describes strategic intent as "the focus that allows individuals within an organization to marshal and leverage their energy, to focus attention, to resist distraction, and to concentrate for as long as it takes to achieve a goal.
Thinking in time means being able to hold past, present and future in mind at the same time to create better decision making and speed implementation. "Strategy is not driven by future intent alone. It is the gap between today’s reality and intent for the future that is critical." Scenario planning is a practical application for incorporating "thinking in time" into strategy making.

Teaching Philosophy: Building a real-world strategy is not about conjuring up some idea that might work. It is not guesswork or hope or wishful thinking, but rather is the well-considered outcome of appropriate-to-task CHOICES involving the PROPER use of methods, concepts, information, theory, and practical experience. Strategy is also not a generic enterprise, but rather a context-specific one enfolding this particular entity (individual, firm, agency, group, society) into this specific context at this specific - present and forecast future - time and place. Strategy is about futures.…

Are you a tactical planner, strategic thinker, or logistician? This may not seem like a very hard question to answer, but for me I fought back and forth with this question. After reading the definitions for tactical planner and strategic thinker several times, in my line of work I’m slightly more of a tactical planner than a strategic thinker. From the examples that I have read, tactical planning is the “how” of a short term goal; while strategic is the “what” of a long term goal to accomplish. As an Emergency Room nurse, we tend to think as a tactical planner in order to perform immediate life saving actions.…

Of all the Athenian leaders during the time of the Sicily invasion, Nicias possessed the clearest vision and a demonstrated ability to think strategically. He provided a comprehensive interpretation of the problems the Athenians might face. He showed a strategic understanding of the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguous nature of the expedition. Nicias applied critical thinking, evaluated the information that the Egestaeans presented, developed valid assumptions and inferences from Alcibiades’ speech, clarified his concern, and presented his point of view that detailed the implications of the expedition. Once the Athenians made the decision to invade Sicily, Nicias presented a concise strategy detailing the ends, ways, and means that mitigated the risks for possible success. Although the Athenians did not adopt his strategy as a whole, due to internal factors and competing interest, his strategy is a classic example of applying strategic thinking to deal with complex problems.…

There is no single, universally accepted definition for strategy. Some understand it as a deliberate plan, drawn up to achieve set goals, others see it more as a process, whereby a company’s decision and actions are made in alignment with opportunities or threats in the industry. Even others define it as a pattern of consistent actions in decision-making and lastly there are those with a military view of strategy, who consider it a manoeuvre to beat and outsmart the competition (Parthasarthy, 2006). By drawing from each of the definitions, one could say that strategy and by extension, strategic management, is constituted of short-term strategies involving managing and planning for the present and long-term decisions and actions, made, taken and implemented by managers to achieve superior competitive advantage, compared to their competitors.…

After a series of study on other works on strategic thinking, and based on other literature on strategy, cognition and adult learning, the authors came to this conclusion that “Strategic thinking is an individual activity undertaken to benefit organizations: we have adopted an emergent view of strategy and identified four major activities as strategic thinking in action: Scanning, questioning, conceptualizing and testing. The knowledge required to perform effective strategic thinking is factual, procedural, conceptual and self-knowledge” (Casey and Goldman, 2010).…
